S630 at home
My old printer refused to print black text once to often, it had to go. I read a few magazines, looked on the web and finaly decided on a new Canon S630. This machine was probable designed for small offices, it's no oil painting to look at and it's colour does not match my PC, carpet or curtains. Four ink tanks, a removable head unit, power saving (it switches itself on and off) print quality and speed are more important to me. With an almost straight paper path, the S630 can print envelopes and card without wrinkling. A simple two position lever sets the head height. USB or Parallel. Cables not provided. My first ever USB device is installed and runs via Windows ME. The Quick Start Guide's pictures and instructions are simple to follow and are in English only. Other than the colour my only criticism is that the output tray is not of the quality I would have expected in this price range. Two thirds of the tray hinge up over the front of the printer, should you forget the paper will push it down again, a slight breeze or a bit of vibration will also cause it to drop into place, a problem if space is tight. Drivers, User's Guide and Setup Software are provided on CD. The expert can make a host of changes to colour tone, print quality, water marks etc. Automatic works fine for me. I have not yet and probably never will push this printer to it's limits. One last small point, appart from the usual clunks, clicks and whirs when it starts itself up, it is difficult to hear it printing over the noise of the fans in my PC. The Canon S630 may be a bit expensive for home use but as with most things you get what you pay for.
