A good economy player, easily region freed

Aug 22, 2001 - By Viktor Laszlo (lassi@iki.fi) (Tampere, Finland)

The Philips 7x2 series is the best budget dvd-player line I have tested. With good connectors (RGB for European televisions for best quality), well laid out menus and remote control and excellent picture/sound quality, it's a bargain compared to its competitors.

The player also manages mp3 discs and good quality cd audio. My only problem with mp3 playback is that it does not show filenames, it only shows directories on the cd-rom as albums and the tracks inside those albums as songs by number. It is quite easily navigable, but needs some getting used to. No digital output for mp3, only analogue. Cd plays digitally through coaxial or optical connectors to digital amplifier.

Although, if you already have a dolby digital amp, the 762 is a bit heavy for you -- go for the 722. If you do have a multichannel home theater amp without decoders, 762 is your thing, but if you don't have an amp at all yet or have a regular stereo thing, go for the 722 and buy a separate amp for about 150 pounds instead...

Highly recomended

A great DVD player which plays many other formats like MP3, VCD CDRW etc. Picture and sound quality is excellent. However VCD playback is not as good as on a PC.

I especially like the bookmark feature, where the player "remembers" where you were on the last 5 DVD's it played.
