As a film student I needed a top quality DVD player that would aid me in my film and movie research and, in turn, compensate a student's budget. The Yelo 800DVD Multi-region DVD player was the only one that fitted the bill and the only one I wanted.
From the other reviews it is apparent that some buyers are upset with their purchase, but it must be noted that these are the minority and that the majority are happy with their Yelo 800DVD Multi-region DVD player hence the average 4star rating. In case you haven't guessed I am not upset with my purchase. I have not experienced any of the faults mentioned in the other reviews apart from one, and that being that I did not receive a SVHS cable, however I do not need one and I'm sure that if I contacted the manufactures and explained the situation they would send me one.
The Yelo 800DVD Multi-region DVD player is by far the best DVD player on the market for its price. Furthermore, I realise that many people might not have heard of Yelo and therefore might feel that they are taking a gamble with an unknown make but rest assured it's a gamble worth taking.
Finally, I would like to add that there is nothing on this DVD player that I don't like, even the 'ping' noise that occurs when opening and shutting the drawer has grown on me as it just adds to its individuality. The style of remote is okay along with the actual DVD player itself. I can't stress enough that if you want great quality for such a great price then the Yelo 800DVD Multi-region DVD player is the player to own.
this may make your decision easier -- buy it!
-- Waited to purchase a DVD player because of the REGION issues as I found myself with both Region 1 and 2 discs. I live in the UK and through my travels I have access to Region 1 discs at a more reasonable price. I was not aware of affordably priced multi-region players so I delayed purchasing a player. When I saw this offer (and after doing the research) I decided that if this was 'as promised' it was time to buy it.
--It arrived and because the manual was so badly written (meaning writers is still struggling with English) I just decided to just 'plug it in' (Using SCART cable provided with player).
--Immediately it was found by my TV and up on the screen came the bright Yelo DVD screen. IT was WORKING right out of the box!
--I then put in region 2 disc. Worked perfectly! Then region 1 disc. Worked perfectly! Fast startup and playback.
--Plugged stereo audio output into my stereo. Great sound! Almost frightening at times as I was bombarded with deep bass and a crisp clear soundtrack way beyond what I was used to getting from my TV. Plays CD's easily and so well that I have now unplugged my CD player from my stereo and used the space for this DVD player. I will use this for all discs.
--Went to menus to see what I could configure. Unlike other reviewer who could not see the configuration screens, mine showed up in clear colours which were easy to read and choose. I suspect that I have a later release of software than prior reviewer(version 5.61) which may have improved the user interface. In any case, that issue is resolved and the UI is exactly what I would have wanted.
--Remote is effective and offers control of all key functions. When they are not available there is an indicator (a hand palm out) on the screen so you know that feature is not supported on that disc.
All in all, I discovered that this was a great purchase, worked perfectly out of the box and I recommed it to anyone looking for multi-region player. Quality of picture and sound is very impressive at a great price.
One note- I did find the directions/hack for accessing the factory configuration screen from one of the reviewers very useful. It is not covered in the manual so I will repeat it with thanks to who posted it. To get to that menu press: EJECT, SETUP, MUTE, LAST, NEXT, and the factory settings menu should appear.
I hope that short review makes purchasing this player easier for you than the process was for me. That is my only motivation.I am confident that you will be as satisfied as I was.
Great Player !!!
The Picture is clean and Crisp and the sound superb, mine was already set up as multi-regional from the box but if its not you may need to change it in the factory settings menu. A big thanks to the earlier reviewers that put the right button combination up :)
In-case you missed it, press EJECT, SETUP, MUTE, LAST, NEXT. From here you can change the multi-regoinal setting, switch it to "bypass" for all regions. You can also disable the macro-vision here, which allows you to connect your DVD player up via your VCR (if it has 2 scarts or other connections). I was surpised to find even with this left on auto it worked fine and I was also able to record a DVD to my VCR without having to change the setting at all. A great bonus for those with older Tv's that only have one scart (probably used by the VCR).
I have no problem with some of the other reviewers comments on the disc drawer being rather jerky and not very smooth, mine seemed absolutley fine.
I too was a little sceptical at first, and was tempted to go for a Sony or other well known manafacturer. But I couldn't find any that were multi-regional and still had 5.1 surround. This fits the bill very nicely, it has full 5.1 surround and other things like s-video, RGB etc.. I was pleased to find a few other bits, 4xZoom, 8x Fast Forward and Rewind, and you can stop the DVD at any time, fidle about and resume at the same point without hitting pause, pressing the stop button twice take you back to the very start. With the reduced price of £150 since Jan 2002, this is a steal.
Amazon were great at delivering too, I placed my order on Boxing Day (26th Dec) and it was on my door on the 3rd of Jan, impressive as most of those days were X-mas and New Year holidays.
I've very pleased with my purchase and I hope this will help you if you have any doubts about buying this DVD Player.
I wish all Hi-Fi hardware was this easy to set up
Surprisingly, it IS multiregion "out of the box", that is, no hacking, no fiddling, no trouble, just play your DVDs from wherever in the world they come from.
It appears that the only thing distinguishing it from models costing twice as much is lack of fancy brand name and expensive-looking brushed-silver body. True, the remote could be more intuitive and the manual could be clearer, but this is also true about many of the pricier units.
Unless you are VERY image-conscious or have audio system costing thousands which would enable you to appreciate (so I am told) the slight difference in quality of bass output, this is definitely an excellent choice.
And yes, Amazon packs it in enough air-cushion-wrap to make a nuclear warhead secure.

I have to say I have never had to take the YELO off of automatic mode, as it effortlessly detects the region, even region 1 enhanced DVD's that cause so many problems and merrily plays away...
The YELO also seems a lot more tolerant of damaged, dirty, or difficult discs as it will play DVD's that will not play on my PC or Panasonic player...Glad I didn't throw them away or return them :)
Only downside I have found is that leaving the disc tray open for more than a minute or two cause the machine to lock up for some reason, requiring a power off to get it working again. Answer, don't leave it open for long periods.
All in all a perfect player for a very reasonable price...worth 5 stars.
