You need this device!!

(5 out of 5) by L. Clark on Dec 3, 2009 (paradise in Ca.)
This is a great product. I had a pretty small 160 gig drive in my laptop. I needed to upgrade my system, so I bought a 320 gig and put my old drive in this device. A quick drive clone utility and presto, my files are all on my new drive and all thanks to this little device. I only ever needed to use a single usb port to power and use this great product. If only everything in the computing world could be so easy to use and so reliable. My old drive is now an external back up drive and works great inside this unit.

Visually stunning, easy to use but not robust enough

(4 out of 5) by Jonathan Chen on Dec 3, 2009 (San Diego, CA)
I'm quite pleased with this product, visually it's very well designed but I feel it's a little bit on the weak side. I wouldn't go ahead and carry it around in my back pocket or any other pocket, it feels that it could get easily dented or damaged. The instructions on the manual were not helpful at all: it indicated to take out the screws (check!), remove the back lid (check!) and insert the HD... huh!? What about removing the OTHER lid at the front of the case??

I didn't go ahead and remove it just like that because I thought I was going against the instructions. Rather, I went on YouTube and did a search on this product. One video showed how to properly install a HD and there I confirmed my theory of removing the front lid. After that installation was a breeze and now my old HD sits in this case while my new one is blasting away in my MB Pro.

I would definitely recommend this product but would warn about the weakish feel of this product. If you intend to use this case at home or at your office while carrying around in a box or some protective bag then I think you will be more than pleased with this product.

A great cheap alternative...

A great cheap alternative to buying an external hard drive if you happen to have an extra internal one around. Easy to put together, simple to format in Windows. Didn't really use the instruction manual, so I'm not sure how helpful it is, but all you really need to do is attach your drive into the case with screws, hook it up to your computer, and then maybe format the drive into NTFS to clear what's already there. I used the built-in Windows formatting tool for this. I like my new drive a lot but wasn't really aware that the cable used up two USB ports. This wasn't really a problem, but if you have a limited number ports it could be. Overall I'm very pleased.

Does a great job as designed!

(5 out of 5) by P. Cassidy on Nov 22, 2009 (Florida, USA)
I installed a WD250gbScorpioBlue drive into one of these nicely compacted drive storage housing. It works beautifully from the start. I do recommend this to anyone that needs a good well designed storage housing.

What I learned: just a few observations of general interest. Firstly it does not include an ESATA cable so if you don't already have one then you will need it. I find the three foot length to be useful for this unit. To have ESATA you need to plug in both cables so the usb becomes the power supply. I discovered that not all the USB will work. If I use the USB2.0 slots and ESATA port on the back of my system everything runs just wonderfully! BUT I can't do that in the front. Only the USB works in the front. On my laptop I only have USB and it is flawless and so great to have in the same briefcase as my Thinkpad. This whole thing is light and tiny a great addition for the road kit.

My older PC also had issues but I used the rear USB it worked but the front do not operate the unit. I suspect that the unit is USB2.0 standard only and any 1.5 USB ports will not work properly. For clarity I think I should point out that the USB ports on the three systems mention all work with my other equipment. It is this system that I had to find the right port first, after that the speed, silence, heat reduction are all fantastic with the Scorpio Blue 250gb drive. If you get this drive do yourself a huge favor download the support software from Western Digital it makes chores as simple as they could be.

Does not recognize hard drives

(1 out of 5) by Kenyon Leggett on Nov 22, 2009 (New York, NY United States)
I purchased this after reading all the other great reviews. I placed my Playstation 3 60 GB hard drive into this enclosure and my computer did not recognize it at all. I thought that was strange so I took my laptop's hard drive out and placed it in this enclosure and again the computer I attached it to did not recognize the drive. I also tried to attach it to a computer at work and got the same results.
