Great Camera!
I purchased this camera for my girlfriend. She did not like her previous camera because it was too delicate and broke after the first week. She tends to drop electronics, frequently. So I bought this camera after reading reviews and talking to people at stores, I made an excellent purchase!
We took this on vacation to the 1000 islands in NY. After 5 minutes of owning this camera she dropped it out of her purse, #1. Camera took it just fine. Later that week she was throwing it to someone else they missed the camera hit the cement, still works as it was out of the box. By the end of the vacation the camera had been dropped on cement or dirt at least 4-5 times and it works great.
We also tested this camera in the St. Lawerence River. We were very sceptical since well it is not in our nature to put electronics in the water. We made sure to read the manual which we forgot to bring and downloaded one online instead. After we made sure the ports for the camera cord, battery compartment/memory card were definately closed into the river it went. We took many underwater pictures. The camera went down to about 5-8 feet and was just fine. Photos came out great and we couldn't be happier. We did not test the temperature aspect of this camera but did use the "tap" feature (by mistake). I will take this sking with me this winter and see how it fares.
One tip I have is that if you are planning to take this underwater, get a flotation device. Either buy the one that is made for this camera or make your own. We had to take great care when switching the camera between users so that it did not see the bottom of the river.

Takes a beating but...
We dropped our other Sony point and shoot into the sand at the beach. That hurt. Completely destroyed but it took great pictures. So we wanted something durable. I think this has been pointed out that the image quality for this camera is lacking. It may have to do with our learning curve because its new but I did alot of tweeking on this thing and the image quality is just not that good. I find that it blows out the highlights and looks a bit grainy. But the main thing is that the sharpness on it is not all that sharp. That may be a personal thing though. I think we may have been better off buying another Sony (which we've had 2 and loved them both) and getting a warranty with it.

I read the reviews, but was hopeful anyways
Boooo. I read the reviews, but felt that statistically, the positive reviews outweighed the negative. I can't believe that 12-megapixel photos can look so bad. This camera takes awful photos. I have a little 2 megapixel Sony that takes better photos. I have a 'big dog' Nikon SLR, so I wanted a 'pocket' camera for the beach, the zoo, etc... My cell phone takes better photos than this.
I really should have believed what I read in the reviews... My bad.

Met expectations
This camera has met its main requirement in my main reason for purchase, the waterproof part. I took this camera to the pool with my kids and we had a blast taking underwater photos. Of course the camera got dropped with the kids wanting to take turns taking pictures and it also fell to the bottom of the deep end which was only 9 feet I believe. When in video mode, the volume isnt the greatest in replay but at least its there.
All in all I only purchased this camera to take it to a waterpark and not being scared if the camera would get destroyed by water and it held its own.
