great product

(4 out of 5) by Kyle Shoemaker on May 24, 2009
I bought this monitor from Office Depot for $279, which is a bit more expensive than what's available on Amazon.. so I wouldn't wince at this price at all. The laptop that this is being pared with won't output to 1920x1200 resolution so I had to get a 1080p monitor...and while I do prefer 16:10 for most purposes it's hard to argue with the 16:9 display for blu-ray. If you've got a card that supports it, 16:10 is a more natural resolution for most people, but as far as 16:9 monitors go... this is the best thing you can get short of ultra-high-end. 16:10 is just a preference of mine and plenty of people prefer 16:9... I just want to recommend that consumers take all angles into account before deciding.

as far as looks go... this thing is BEAUTIFUL!
for my money it looks as good as any of the mid-range screens in it's class at a lower-end price. As another review stated the default settings are a bit bright, but I'm getting used to it... the contrast and black levels on this thing are strong.

I've played Audiosurf and HL2:E2 on this monitor extensively, and I've come to the conclusion that this is an excellent gaming monitor... GOTTA love that 2MS response time.

I have 2 issues, neither are dealbreakers.

1 HDMI port... I really would prefer to not have to swap my Xbox and PC constantly, but very few monitors have multiple ports because it's generally accepted that monitors are for 1 purpose and TVs are multipurpose.

the speakers are absolutely terrible... I'll be getting a USB soundcard and 5.1 speakers for my laptop soon, so it's only a problem for me in the short term.

and be aware if you're going to be using the headphone jack, it's placed on the rear panel and a complete pain to get to.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

6/16/09 update:
still love this thing, but the headphone jack is totally useless. I have a decent set of headphones (Sennheiser HD-280)and I get a ridiculous fuzzy feedback sound that is similar to a vinyl record. Some people probably won't mind... but the jack on most PCs is going to be way better... I'll only be using it for the 360 from now on.

just a heads up if you're planning on using that piece of crap.

I think it's pretty safe to say that this monitor is great at it's prime function, but fails in multiple ways when it comes to handling audio... my advice is to just not let it.

Good Monitor, Bad Speakers

(4 out of 5) by Michael Valentine on Sep 26, 2009
I bought two 24" monitors at the same time to find out which was better (and because two people need one). The other was the ASUS VW246H. This monitor has sharper text, and in my opinion looks better. The GUI isn't as refined as the Asus but one never really bothers with that after initial setup. The speakers on this monitor are a joke but I didn't buy a monitor for its speakers so it's not an issue. If you want good monitor speakers, go with Asus' monitor -- besides the fact that they're on the back and close to each other [not much stereo] they're good speakers.

Great monitor with a caveat

(4 out of 5) by Kerkar on Feb 17, 2009 (CA USA)
[...]It is a great monitor, but there is a caveat: although the monitor is full HD 1080p [1920x1080 resolution], the weak link is your PC's ability to provide a 1920x1080 input. We found out through Viewsonic tech support that our PC graphics cannot; and we may need an expensive video card to do so. There is no discernible effect of this mismatch on using it to watch Internet video or TV [that looks awesome on this large wide screen], but it does lead to ghosting of some text lines when used as a PC monitor. Another advantage of this large wide screen is that it allows opening of 2 to 3 windows simultaneously without having to minimize one to view another.

Good Value buy

(5 out of 5) by M. B. Kelly on Aug 4, 2009 (Charlotte, NC)
I read all the reviews when buying this monitor, and frankly I was concerned. However, I just got the monitor, opened the box, hooked it up, and changed resolution to 1900 , and BAM, it works like it should, its beautiful, and none of the problems described by other users. The text is just fine. I did not hook up the speakers, but I did now want them anyway. Its getting pretty hard to find a monitor in this price range without speakers (Go figure). Anyway, don't fear the reaper, it comes with a warranty, and none of these things last longer than 5 years anyway. (Get over your expectations - for 200 bucks, that time works out pretty well). The days of your Dad's 30 year old TV are gone my friends. All things considered, this is a great Monitor.

Things I don't like:

1. The stand - it could be better, I used to have a little Scoop in my last monitor that I put things like USB Sticks in.. but the adjustment is very nice, very easy to do.
2. Speakers - WHY do I want them? Get rid of this. Who's dumb idea was it to put speakers (With MAGNETS) in a LCD monitor?
3. Setup - it was way too easy to setup, and the controls I mastered in seconds. That's not compatible with your competitors, start making this harder on your customers please.

Great Picture

(4 out of 5) by Christopher Mcintyre on Jun 25, 2009 (Los Angeles)
I use this 100% for my xbox 360 and PS3 and the picture looks great. Sound is kinda bad, but I have a gaming headset so this is a non-issue for me. If you don't have a headset, or want to use this as a TV, I'd suggest looking at something with a TV tuner (they tend to have better speakers). Overall, great TV for my narrow use.

Just an update: I purchased Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System (Black) for $25 and it complements the monitor perfectly. I have the monitor in a cabinet and the sub and both speakers fit behind the monitor. The little volumer controller sticks out under the monitor for use, but otherwise, you don't even know the speakers are there. If you are using this as a TV or console gaming monitor and want good inexpensive sound - consider adding these speakers.
