Excellent picture for 1 month. Then a customer service nightmare.

The monitor had a very nice picture for the month that it was functioning. When it went black suddenly, I was sent into the ASUS Customer Service abyss. All phone calls seemed to send me back to the website... which was useless. I finally managed to get an RMA and sent the monitor back at my cost. After 5 weeks with no email or calls as to the status of the monitor, I finally received my supposedly repaired monitor back. Blacks are red. The picture quality is terrible with ghosting and flickering everywhere. Clearly nobody even looked at the monitor after "repairing" it.

I will seek a refund and will never purchase ASUS products again.

Simply Spectacular

While I have used Asus MoBo's and video cards in the past, this is my first Asus monitor.

I replaced two 17" Samsung LCD's with this one 24". It is truly beautfiul. The color clarity and sharpness of the image are excellent. The HDMI port allows me to hook up a cable box to watch TV. The DVI port is connected to my PC.

I am very impressed with this ASUS VH242H monitor.

Great Brand, Great Price, Buy it!

Well, I was shopping for a new monitor to upgrade my 15 inch lcd. After shopping around, I saw this monitor and instantly was intrigued. A 24 inch monitor for less than 200 dollars seemed a little cheap. But anyone who knows about computers can tell you that Asus is no small name. So I gave it a shot, and I don't regret it! This monitor looks great with computer games, it has all the computer inputs you need as well as HDMI! Hooking an Xbox 360 through this looks just as good as my 1080p 42" tv. Even my HDMI DVR box looks great with this monitor. The buttons feel a little cheap on this, but when do you ever use them? This monitor is a smart choice to save the most money and have the same quality as a $400 monitor. I get compliments about this monitor from people who paid way more for an HP or Dell monitor. If you are the least bit interested in this product, buy it!

Great - but...

(4 out of 5) by That Guy Who Posts on Amazon on Sep 13, 2009
I purchased this monitor a couple months ago after discovering how poorly my PS3 performed on my 20" CRT television; many games were simply unplayable because of blurry text, so a replacement had to be made. So, I did a little research and eventually decided to purchase this monitor, as it was about the right size for my needs and had the feature that I needed most, HDMI input. It was also significantly cheaper than comparatively-sized monitors and TVs.

Set-up was fairly easy, though the cables are a bit difficult to plug in. I connected the power cable to the monitor, then I attached the HDMI cable (which I purchased separately; VGA and DVI cables are included here, but not HDMI). I started up the monitor and the PS3, but the monitor seemed to find the signal a bit more slowly than I would have liked. I attributed this entirely to the PS3; I was wrong. It took several seconds to find the HDMI signal every time I started it, and I would frequently miss the PS3's start-up jingle. I figured this was normal; again, I was wrong.

Anyway, I continued with the monitor for the next couple weeks, being pretty happy with it, though not totally satisfied. The colors looked bland on Standard mode and were too dark on Dynamic, and finding a happy medium via manual adjustment was nearly impossible. On top of that, the start-up problem worsened; in addition to being delayed, the monitor would also flash gray and white several times before returning to normal. I thought this was a problem with the PS3 or the HDMI cable, but it wasn't - eventually, it began flashing even on the monitor's start-up screen. Yet again, I assumed this to be normal and not a problem.

A few weeks later, the flashing problem was extended into gameplay itself, though only for a few minutes. I shrugged it off as a minor annoyance. I hit my breaking point when the flashing began to occur rapidly after 30 minutes of playing a game. I shipped it back to Amazon and asked for a replacement.

The replacement, which is now several weeks old, has had none of these problems. It starts up faster, the colors were perfect out of the box, and there is no odd flash. I am thoroughly happy with my replacement model; it runs beautifully at 720p or 1080p. Upscaled DVDs (live-action and animated) and games both look great, though I haven't been able to extensively test Blu-rays.

Now, the bad. The menu system is a bit finicky, but I've never had to use it on the replacement model. The buttons are a bit chintzy, and the glossy screen border is too shiny for my taste, but it's not very distracting and I haven't noticed a "tunnel effect." The speakers are also pretty weak and have almost no bass, but what do you expect from speakers you can't even see? The monitor does, of course, support headphones, and the Sennheiser HD 202 headphones perform admirably. This does bring me to my final complaint - the cable connectors are very difficult to reach. I can understand this for the video inputs, but the headphone jack is also placed on the back of the monitor, right next to the almost identical audio-in jack (hint: the audio-in jack is green, though you can't really tell when you're trying to plug them in without turning the monitor around), and they're not labeled clearly enough to tell the difference.

Regardless of these small complaints, the replacement monitor gets five stars for value and quality. I'm going to knock off one star for my minor gripes and the fact that a replacement was necessary. I highly recommend this monitor, but if you see white and gray, get a replacement immediately.

Great value for the money

I got this monitor some weeks ago for $189, and it's great... default color presets are not very satisfying, but after playing it for a while it works great, 1920x1080 is great to use programing IDEs, watch movies, gaming, etc... it's a excellent price/product deal
