Why Buy a Big TV?

(5 out of 5) by Mr Keyseo on Jan 6, 2009 (Fresno, CA USA)
The Epson Movie Mate is a tremendous product. Instead of purchasing a large screen LCD or plasma television, I opted to go this route. Let's face it - these days, everything is online. Hook your laptop right up to this bad boy and grab your instant play Netflix or check out the latest offerings on Hulu. It's absolutely amazing! The contrast ratio on this puppy is only 1:300 but it's all you need. Consider that a commercial theatre is usually just 1:150 - why would you need 1:1000????

Be cautious.

(3 out of 5) by M. Hughes on Feb 9, 2009 (Virgnia)
I wrote a scathing review of my experience in purchasing this product, at first, when Electronics Expo, the Amazon-vendor, would not accept a return on this product. My decision to return it was based immediately on observing the "screen door" appearance (resolution)compared to another DLP model a friend let me borrow and try. Also, the zoom feature wasn't as good. Having said that, though, the convenience of this design, with the DVD player and sound built in, is a very nice thing, and in the end, I decided to keep it and make use of it for that reason alone. I also got an email and phone number from Electronics Expo trying to make good on the deal. The rep was reachable by phone, and tried to make me happy. I recommended they find a way to say "you may not return this item if you purchase it" show up somewhere on the cart check-out page before you click "complete purchase." So, let the buyer beware.Epson MovieMate 55 Portable 3LCD Home Theater Projector with Built In DVD Player

So far, so good

(5 out of 5) by R. Startzman on Dec 5, 2008 (Texas)
I got this projector about a week ago and here's what I can say so far
1. The Model 55 is very easy to set up. The Quick Start user's guide is very good and it took me about a minute after I got it out of the well-cushioned package to show a movie on DVD.
2. Everything, including the PC and TV inputs, worked flawlessly.
3. The device is very portable with carrying handles built in
4. Controls on the remote are predictable and logical. I spent little time referring to the user's guide.
5. The video quality is quite good and almost up to TV LCD quality
6. Having stereo loudspeakers in the unit works very well and makes the system very portable. Sound quality is reasonably good.
It's too early to tell about reliability, but right now it looks like Epson has a hit on its hands. It's priced right and easy to use.

Step up? NO! Step down from Moviemate 30s

(2 out of 5) by J. Stewart on Jun 12, 2009 (USA)
This unit is being tauted as the next step up from the Moviemate 30 and has a brighter bulb! BIG DEAL. The Moviemate 30 had: Horizontal and Vertical Lens Shift - The 55 does not! This is almost impossible to even line it up on a wall let along the 80 inch screen! The so called 5.1 dts virtual surround sound is PATHETIC compared to the Moviemate 30's 2 10 watt stereo speakers. This unit has 8 watt speakers and arent even Jensen like the older 30s model! The older model also had OPTICAL zoom, this one has DIGITAL! LAst but not least for a slap in the face, the older model had an output for a subwoofer - this DOESNT - just an output for amplifier! ARGH! The only thing they did to this was make it black and add a handle. VERY DISAPOINTED EPSON as I was gonna send this back and get the 72 but will wait for that ones price to drop further. My advice - IF you can find the Epson Moviemate 30s GET THAT ONE!

Portable, Easy to Use, Quality Picture and Color

(5 out of 5) by Jennifer on Jun 16, 2009 (MA)
I purchased this machine for the sole use of using it outside for "drive in" movie nights. So far I've used it for so much more. Yes, we have had one night without rain and were able to use it. We had a backyard of very happy teenagers watching scary movies until the wee hours of the morning. Then, we played Wii on it and just for giggles, I hooked it up to my laptop to see what viewing pleasure could be found on that. AMAZING. This is the EASIEST projector I have ever used. The sound quality is incredible. Picture is terrific and the FUN is absolutely priceless. I also purchased a blow up screen for outdoor use and a pull down screen for inside making it a very versatile item. My entire family is enjoying this projector. I've only had this item for a few weeks, but so far everything about it is perfect! For me, this is best item I have purchased in a very long time.
