Works with iPhone 3G --

(3 out of 5) by portadelsol on Aug 19, 2008 (LA, CA)
Decent item, but the description says the charger works and has been tested with the iPhone 3G.

What it doesn't say is that it that you will get a message stating that it will only work in AIRPLANE MODE. Click "NO" to NOT go into AIRPLANE mode and it wil work fine anyway.

Also, you can skip connecting the charging piece and only connect the sound/headphone output to the FM transmitter -- it works fine as well.

Does not fit in my car

(2 out of 5) by E. Cook on Sep 17, 2008 (Washington D.C.)
I have three complaints regarding this device:

(1) The part of the device that plugs into the car's cigarette lighters (i.e. outlets) is a rigid plug extending from the back of the device. This means that if your cigarette lighters are tucked into corners, gloveboxes, etc., the device cannot be plugged into your car. You need a wide, unobstructed approach coming into your outlet. Check out the pictures I added to the product description - you'll see what I mean.

(2) I live in an urban area where MANY radio stations broadcast FM signals. There is only one spot on the dial that is essentially unused, and therefore available to the device. The sound quality in this one open spot is not that great - some static carries through. Perhaps we will get better transmission on our drives into rural areas of the country.

(3) While the device claims to be compatible with iPhone 3G, it is not an Apple supported device. Consequences? (a) Your iPhone gets forced into Airplane Mode when you connect to the device. (b) You get warnings about it being an unsupported device, and (c) The battery charging icon does not indicate that charging is actually occurring. (No giant green battery on the front screen.) All this gives me the heebie-jeebies, but perhaps that's just what Apple wants me to feel. We paid a lot for our iPhones 3G, and using unsupported gear makes me nervous.

A redesign of the plug on the back would solve the fit problem, but not the issue of it being an unsupported product.

Be sure to check the vendor's return policy before choosing this for your car. You may need to send the device back!

8in1 car FM transmitter

(4 out of 5) by Sonny Ramaswamy on Sep 15, 2008 (West Lafayette, IN)
i like this product and works great with my 3G iPhone and the sound is excellent, but it sticks out of my cigarette lighter making it difficult to shift the transmission in my Ford Explorer Sporttrac. If you want to buy this you might want to make sure the cigarette lighter is not too close to the transmission. The remote control that comes in the package is worthless.

Warning: No GPS signal !!!

(2 out of 5) by Eyal Carmi on Mar 3, 2009
Two downsides i found (using it with iPhone 3G) to this item which are not published on the product page is that:

1. Calls sound isn't passed via RF as iPod songs, so if you receive a call in the car you will have to hear it on the iPgone's speaker or using a bluetooth device.

2. If you connect the iPhone to the power cable the GPS signal stops since it is not compatible which to me is a major downside of the device...

Good budget item, easy install and worth a look.

FM Transmitters be they ones for mp3/4 players or satellite radio never sound very clear and are always a bit clumsy looking, just know that going in. Its just the way it is but it's the best budget option as getting a in dash adaptable unit can be expensive,

I have an 80 gig ipod video classic.

From opening box to finding a clear FM signal this took me less than 2 minutes to plug in and get rolling. The adjustable brackets snugly fit my ipod and I would never use it if there was a chance of it falling while driving. The blue display has a time on it that starts counting the moment you start the car which I find a useful feature while driving. I personally don't think it looks that great but a handful of people have commented on thinking it's slick look.

The remote control is not very useful but I never though it would be and I also which the unit was adjustable from left to right and not just up or down so thus the 4 stars. I am also basing the stars on the cost, had this been a $50 + item I would have given it less.

Note this also charges your ipod.

If you're wanting to stay in a budget this is a great item. I would buy it again.
