very impressed

(5 out of 5) by jeremy spencer on Sep 8, 2008 (Luton, Bedfordshire United Kingdom)
It was with great thought that I decided to upgrade from the eeepc 700, as I'd had a very good few months run with it. Because I travel a lot, airport security hassles were a minimum, as I could toss it into a small backpack without worry and setting up wireless in hotel rooms and toting the thing around was a breeze. However, being a writer and a musician, because I ended up using the thing for 50% more time than my desktop, the small keyboard and screen was proving to be limiting for long hours of use. Anyway I felt it best to stick with Asus, even though there were a lot of new UMPCs vying for attention! I finally settled on this eeepc 1000. I have no complaints. I installed Windows XP with all my major programs and have room to spare. No error messages, mail inbox and wireless is breeze, good accuracy on the keyboard, nice bright screen. (I can even use the thing in the shade outside on a sunny day with very good visibilty and incredible battery life.) And 40G ssd! It even has stereo built in microphones, which makes recording a quick acoustic demo very quick and easy. It's a sturdy good product that I highly recommend.

Excellent small, affordable computer!

(5 out of 5) by Stanley J. Jamrog III on Feb 18, 2009
I love this thing. I am an adjunct professor at a local college, teaching Network Security. I pretty much HAVE to have a computer I can carry with me. The problem is that I blew several discs in my back some years back. Even standing for a long time is painful. There was simply no way I could carry the 17" notebook I built (at a cost of $1800) several years ago. The Eee PC saved the day!

First, it is inexpensive, only a fraction of the price I paid for my other laptop. Second, it is very light, coming in at under 3 pounds! The screen is large enough that my old eyes can see the screen, and my large fingers have no problem typing on the keyboard. I can run all my security software no issues, and after classes, I can come home, rest my back, and watch some TV on FanCast, all without a charge! I get about 4.5 hours with the CPU on its highest setting, watching video and running security programs and presentations. This computer is very powerful for its size and price. Sure, it is no gaming machine, but I didn't buy it for that!

Two issues I had (not really much of an issue for me). First, the right shift key is in a weird place, but I sight type, so no issue. If you touch type you might want to consider the 1000he which has a better keyboard layout. Second, the installed Linux, while great for non power users of Linux, was simply too limited for me. It was a rather easy transition to Eeebuntu however, and everything works nicely out of the box with it. Eeebuntu had the programs I needed that simply weren't available from the standard Xandros Linux offered. The wireless card is not terribly Linux friendly, so many Linux distros need a lot of work to get it running, but not Eeebuntu or Puppy Linux.

The SSD drives are nice. It comes with a fast primary 8G drive and a slower secondary 32G drive. Planning on upgrading the 32G drive with a faster Runcore drive. I also upgraded to 2G ram (easily done). The ssd drives are nice, no moving parts to worry about in a portable device.

I highly recommend this computer. Just be warned that it is a LINUX computer, NOT Windows! While a selling point for me, that might cause some problems for others. Your Windows software will not work (some will work with WINE, but don't count on it). Be committed to learning Linux. It isn't hard nowadays, and Linux can do almost everything Windows can, more in some cases, and all the programs are free, a real bonus!

Real affordable, and very powerful for the price, with a long battery life! What else do you want in a very portable computing platform?

You get what you pay for

First, the good stuff. It's totally light weight just like they said and the 10" size is perfect for carrying around. Also, as they said, it's really, really easy to use! All you do, is click the "web" icon and you're off surfing the web. (of course, you'd have to be connected to the internet somehow)The best part is, you don't have to worry about viruses because you're not running Internet Explorer or Windows. Then, you have to remember that you're also not running as the super user so even if anything were to happen, you don't have permission to destroy your operating system.

Now for the bad things, as I started using it, I noticed that this computer is filled with bugs (not horrible bugs like Windows but there are bugs here and there). I also noticed that the mouse pad doesn't work very well. i.e. I'm trying to click on a link and the mouse cursor just goes up or down and I end up clicking something else. I fixed this by turning down the mouse pad sensitivity.

The UI is also slow and sluggish at times. It doesn't appear to multi-task very well either. (but I guess I was spoiled by my $2000 Sony)

But who cares! it runs Linux and it was just under $400. So, I'm not complaining about the bugs and the mouse pad. Now, if this computer was $2000 and the mouse pad was a little funky, I'd be complaining for sure.

Small Wonder Big Value

(5 out of 5) by John R. Williams on Dec 24, 2008 (Columbus, OH USA)
I've waited years to see this and now finally it is here, an ultra compact touch-type able wifi surfer and no M$ too! I'm new to Linux so I'm still on the default Xandros, but activating IceWm enabled me to find a better theme for the application windows -- OK for now. With a screen this small I only see the kioskish desktop when I want something. Aestheticlly, this ebony black beauty is perfection.

The keyboard is close enough to full size that I can touch type just fine, maybe even better (short fingers). Not being a big point/click type the touchpad is very convenient, only caveat being the over sensitive pad nuisance. Just disable tapping and use the buttons instead and that problem is gone. The shift key location is a tradeoff I'm happy to make since I use the arrow keys a lot and prefer this setup.

I'm packing it in a nice slim case logic bag designed for the netbook and it fits like a glove. At the cafe it's perfect on the small tabletop. Just slide it out and fire it up. No lugging, no outlet. Nothing. The mobile device too small; laptop is too big. This is the future and it has arrived.

If you have to have XP or just don't adapt then get that instead. I'd rather have the solid drive and open source possibilities. For an on-the-go computer this holds hundreds of albums, and it is perfect for surfing and writing. Some minor quibbles aren't quite enough IMHO to cost it a single star, and I just don't see how they could have designed it better. Just the right size and weight too.

A couple years ago I thought I had finally found the ideal when looking at a subnotebook but no way I could shell out 2-3 grand. This is the deal. I'll be happy with this for years and will look forward to even more powerful small machines to come.

Love It

(4 out of 5) by Bill Johnson on Oct 19, 2008 (Columbia City, OR USA)
I've had this laptop for a week. It works great. The laptop is very portable and easy to carry around. Good battery life.

I recommend upgrading to the 2gb of memory, otherwise the computer is a bit sluggish.

I have large hands and the keyboard is taking some getting used to. However within a week I am rapidly getting used to it.

I purchased this laptop to take on the road and it is working great for that purpose.
