Only issue is the OS

(5 out of 5) by B. Walcott on Sep 30, 2008
I love this little computer. I use it for everything; it's great for school. The only issue that I've had with it was the operating system. It came with Xandros pre-installed, but it is incredibly oversimplified and the icons tend to disappear on you. However, I easily fixed this by installing Ubuntu-Eee, replacing the old OS. Now everything works perfectly! For more on Ubuntu-Eee, [...]

This is NOT a 40 Gig SSD ! BEWARE! It's an 8 Gig SSD with a 32 Gig FLASH

(1 out of 5) by Terren Trousset on Feb 4, 2009 (bend, oregon)
False advertising let me to believe this was a 40 Gig SSD. It says so on the box, in the amazon ad, on the Asus website, and in the manual. The TRUTH is... it's only an 8 Gig SSD with a 32 Gig Flash Ram built in. These are TWO PHYSICAL DISKS, not partitions. The 8 gig is actually in 4 partitions out of the box (Linux version) and the 32 is a 30 Gig partition.

CALL The 800 # on the laptop is self... 888 678 3688 option 3 then 1

I just now got off the phone after 2 days trying to get information out of ASUS. I talked to Chris-tech Angel-tech-manager and Chad-linux specialist. Chad finally told me the truth, and that I cannot combine the two drives to make a 40 Gig drive. THAT's dispicable. Shame on ASUS.

Other than that? This thing rocks. I'm just pissed at the false information. Hence the 1 star. Apparently the 8 Gig SSD is soldered to the board and cannot be swapped for a larger. I cannot confirm this yet. Apparently the 32 Gig flash MAY be able to be changed, via a mini PCIe connector. Again, I cannot confirm this.

For SPEED, install your OS to the 8 Gig SSD drive which will be faster than the flash ram. Throw a 32 or 64 gig high speed SD card in the side for ~100 Gig of storage total.

Don't believe me? CALL ASUS. Boot from a partitioning CD or an XP install disk, and see for yourself.

Linus boots in about 25 seconds, and shuts down in 6!
XP runs great, as the unit comes with a driver support CD for XP.
From the internal 32 Gig FLASH RAM drive, XP starts in about a minute.
Same for shut down.

the finest GNU/Linux portable hardware currently available

(5 out of 5) by willie on Jan 18, 2009 (pineapple park, FL, USA)
The Asus Eee PC 1000 comes installed with an OEM Xandros distro, but can run other Linux distributions easily (Eeebuntu is best right now, IMO) from any of its USB ports or from an SDHC card (my choice). This netbook boots from SDHC in less than 55 seconds, and comes with a 6600MAh battery which, combined with its Atom processor and the eee-control desktop tray utility to manage processor speed, will easily power this netbook for more than five hours - even more if wireless is turned off and the screen dimmed. I have purchased and used many notebooks over the past decade but this is the first to flawlessly support a Linux-based OS. And using the Synaptic package manager provides fast and easy access and installation of thousands of quality free software - all thanks to the efforts of programmers around the world who believe in the power of free software and the GNU General Public License.

The 1000 uses the same 12V 3A power supply as the Eee PC 900, along with the same 2GB RAM (PC2 DDR2 5300 667MHz, 200-pin). You can set the BIOS to boot from SDHC, offering a hands-off way to run custom distros for your needs. The FUSBi iso-> USB stick installer is the best way to put a different Linux distro .iso image on a USB stick, which can then be booted on your 1000 to install onto either the internal 8GB SSD (there's also a separate 32GB SSD, e.g. this netbook being a '40GB' Linux model), or in my case onto an inexpensive SDHC card. You can access the RAM and 32GB SDD from the bottom of the Eee 1000 by undoing two screws.

Owners of earlier 700- or 900-series Eee PCs will find the OEM Xandros to be more 'refined' with additional features, along with the default inclusion of Sun Microsystem's StarOffice 8, not the Openoffice.org office suite (both are the same, so no worry).

As with other Linux netbooks from Asus, you'll get a full restore DVD with an operating system and all software - unlike the Windoze-based models.

The glossy black cover of this notebook attracts fingerprints (unlike the black surface of the 900), but if you practice good personal hygiene and wash your hands and don't pick your nose, you'll be able to keep your 1000 in pristine shape. A 'skin' can provide some protection, but Asus kindly includes a wonderful soft case with a zipper to protect your new netbook.

I'm truly happy with my purchase and have not found a single problem with this laptop. It will be used in the field during portable high-frequency digital communications operations, running amateur radio operator software for logging and PSK31, while attached to various HF transceivers, such as the SGC SG-2020, Yaesu FT-817, or Small Wonder Labs PSK-20. Synaptic offers installs of nearly 1,000 amateur radio-related software packages, such as gMFSK and xlog. The long battery run-time of the 1000, and the ability to run from 12V 3A power supply is perfect to support battery driven full-day QRP operation!

Quirky but great

(5 out of 5) by J. Rudd on Sep 28, 2008 (Chicago, IL)
When I received the computer with Xandros, the first thing I did was plug in my external drive and install Windows XP Pro with nLite to make the installation smaller and slipstream the drivers into the install to speed things up a bit. With XP Pro running, the computer boots up in around 30 seconds, and nearly instantly if on standby. It runs decently fast with a few programs open, but bogs down on heavily java scripted pages and running video, but only so much can be expected of a ultra low voltage processor. I have been reliably getting 6 hours of battery life with Wi-fi, full brightness and the processor set on high. If I put the processor on power saving and lower the brightness, I did get 10 hours on a charge. This really is a great laptop for work and internet surfing. This has entirely replaced all of my other computers, except for one that I use solely as a DVR. Overall a great product and I recommend it to every one. A word of warning though, Xandros is terrible, and if you don't want to spend for a licensed copy of XP, I would recommend checking out the other Linux releases that have driver support, such as Debian.

Good second laptop

(4 out of 5) by Aaron Thomas on Aug 24, 2008
Purchased this as a second laptop for when I travel on business. Started out with it's baby brother, the 900 and returned it. This machine, while by no means a quick PC, will at least allow me to surf the web, respond to e-mail, etc. Nice size, but very annoying little thing is the layout of the right Shift key. One of the arrow keys is where it should logically be, so you have to train yourself not to Shift with your right hand...
