SSD

(5 out of 5) by steven on Feb 21, 2009 (none)
Not really sure what SSD is. According to the researches, SSD is energy efficient and requires more money. The capacity is one of my major concerns. Way too small comparing to regular HDD.

OK

At first I gave it 2 stars, because wireless networking was broken. THIS CAN BE FIXED, by reinstalling the (Linux) OS. To do this, you need a Windows XP box with a DVD drive (that's what the utility needs) and a 2Gig USB drive. Apparently the disk image that is on the restore DVD is newer (or at least less buggy) than the one installed on the Eee PC out of the box.

Now that wireless is working, I'd give it 3 stars (Amazon apparently won't let me change the rating). It's an OK value. It's not as wide as typical laptops, but actually thicker than many. It's lighter than my MacBook Pro, but not by much, and about twice as thick. The keys are tiny -- they should have tried to make space savings in the thickness of the device, not the width. It's basically impossible for an adult to touch-type on it, and even hunt-and-pecking is difficult. The desktop is pretty clunky, but can be fixed (go to wiki.eeeuser.com for details).

It's about half the cost of a MacBook (which is only a little wider, thinner, about the same weight, and much easier to type on), and it's about half as good. Battery life is pretty good for a device like this. Depending on how much you have to spend you might be better off going for the MacBook -- the form factor is better and isn't much bigger.

Great machine, but not at $619!

I'm sure this is just a database error, but $619 is more than twice the price this machine sells for from any other vendor.

The badness goes on and on..

(1 out of 5) by Cj Aronson on Oct 22, 2008 (Santa Cruz, CA USA)
I got my fabulous eee pc 901. It booted right up hooked to my wireless and was seemingly amazing. The next day it wouldn't boot anymore. It said to hit F2 or Tab. The Asus tech support folks were NOT helpful at all. The were super rude and annoyed that I couldn't find the reset hole that is completely buried under a somewhat permanent sticker. That reset didn't help anyway. They told me that if I only had a CD/DVD drive then I could boot it from the start up disk and restore it. Turns out they lied. That only works if the computer responds to the tab key to put me in the bios. Anyway Amazon was shipping me another one but of course it isn't going to be here before my trip and that was the whole point of getting one. So far my experience with Amazon and the Eee PC are far from stellar. Sigh.

I hope you all have better luck than I have.

dissapointed

(2 out of 5) by Claude A. Dill III on Aug 28, 2008 (Concord NC)
I really wanted to like this PC, but when my Verizon phone modem would not work, I was dissapointed. To make matters worse, the tec support at Asus were a joke. I sure hope they get their act together.
