Great for playing off hard drive through USB 2.0 as well as many formats Divx, wmv

Region Free:
press Setup
select the Preference Tab
Press 1,3,8,9,3,1
Press up/down key to select "0"
and hit menu to exit.
Prior to this I had a 5982/37 which had 1.1 usb and I had some trouble with avi's at high bitrate through the USB 1.1 port but the 2.0 on the 5992 fixed that. Both players play divx (avi) files but the major upgrades to the 5992 are USB 2.0, plays wmv files, now has 14 characters for files on hard drive or memory stick, you can rip music from cd to hard drive in mp format, you can play vob through the usb. The remote is much improved over the 5982 as well. In summary this is a great deal if you need a player that does a good job upconverting to 1080p, supports divx (avi), wmv and has usb 2.0 for connecting a hard drive or memory stick (must be fat 32 - for drives over 32 gb there are several utilities for doing this such as awissknife or fat32.exe - I have a 1 TB WD connected to mine). Also, to sort the fat32 files alphabetically by name there is a freeware FolderSort.exe which you can download to keep your folders and files alphabetically when you play the HD through the USB. The DVD player reads the folders/files in order they were loaded so for convenience you can sort them yourself with FolderSort. Bought mine for $39.99.
There are additional firmware upghrades by a developer Vb6rocod which makes some great changes to the setup options and screens. For example itlets you see file characters much longer than the standard Philips release (at first it was 40 characters from a cd/dvd then upgraded furtherto the length of the bar on the scree; the files through the usb are limited to either 21 or 23 which is a nice improvement), adds font choices to subtitels, colors to subtitles and some other fixes. Philips does it again

Philips, what can I say? It plays VCD's KvCD's, Divx etc. (for those that don't know, u can take an .avi file, burn it as data and watch it on here. I don't know if that works for other types of media files tho. Burning as data is very fast.) I live by Philips for being one of the few DVD players that can handle probably any type of disc thrown at it. I have a DVD movie that I brought and after some months it stuttered on my Go Video, then locked it up. Philips handled it like a dream. Even if it was scratched or the Go Video needed cleaning, I didn't have to find out using Philips. I just found out part of my answer: I put in a scratched CD just now and no stutters.
Remote has an eject button on the remote, can also use the button to close the disc drawer. (yea I'm lazy at times) It has volume control. Don't really know what its for yet, but its there. If connecting by HDMI and/or to a HDTV, make sure u go into the picture setup page of the DVD player & the screen size settings of your TV and do trial n error to get the best picture. Just selecting 720p, 1080i/p in the DVD settings doesn't necessarily mean you get the best picture. U can create .mp3s from CD's. You can set the bitrate (192kbps shoulda been the default tho, not 128kbps,) and some other things that I thought I could only do on my PC. Nice.
One added feature thats a plus for some of you on the net: it has a lip sync feature. What it does: you can adjust the audio speed in movies & videos that are out of sync. So for those movies where the audio doesnt match the video, u can fix it. Something else I thought I could only do on my PC. Nice!!!

A Must Have If Your A DIvX,Xvid,WMV Fan

I can't believe I am the first to review this product because it works like a charm. The USB input on the front of the player will accept a flash drive or an external hard drive as long as its formatted in fat32 if its over 32Gig in size. I am here to purchase another one, so I gotta go.

Good upconversion but bad disk operation
(3 out of 5) by K. Lea on Sep 26, 2008 (MD, USA)I bought this Phillips DVP5992/37 upconvert DVD player from Amazon 3 days ago after reading all those great reviews but now I am disappointed.
It's a good DVD player to upcovert DVDs to 1080P when it works, however, the player is having frequent troubles reading VCDs and DVDs. It may successfully read and play once in while and next time it may get stuck on "Loading". Once this happens, both the remote control and the player's control buttons will completely cease to function. You can neither open the disc tray nor power it off. The only way to wake it up is by unplugging and then plugging back the power cord, and wait for several minutes. I have already upgraded the firmware to version 31 and removed region restriction but in vain.
Another disappointment is that it plays MP3 files but can't play avi video taken with my Canon digital camera. I copied the videos onto a USB flash drive but this DVD player can't support the video codec and only plays the sound tracks of the videos.
I am returning it for an exchange or refund.

After I returned the above unit. I found and bought one at Costco to try again. This new unit is loaded with the most updated v.31 firmware and it has been working properly for a week. I also found a way on my PC to use NTI CD & DVD-Maker 7 software to convert my camera's avi video to mpeg2 or mpeg4 format which can be played by the DVP5992 directly on my HDTV.
The only minor complaint is that this player is a bit slow to respond to the remote control, otherwise, it's a great upconvert player. I think I should raise this item to 4 stars.

Great player

This is their best player yet as they have finally worked out how to make a good remote control : very unlike their previous models which came with hideous chunks of plastic, this comes with a black remote that is slim, attractive and has an eject button. No more holding down "stop" just to kick out a DVD.
It's easily made region-free: just eject the disc, hit "Setup", go to the "Preferences" tab, type 138931, then use up and down to set the region popup menu to 0, hit "OK". It takes less than a minute, and then it's region-free forever.
This player gives great picture quality on an HDTV, even more so with PAL DVDs from England. With lesser US players that don't scale up to HD the picture gets scaled down to 640x480 then scaled up to HD by the TV. This player scales straight from PAL's 768x576 up to HD resolution with no data loss and the results are great.
The DivX playback from USB looks great.
Unlike the previous model (the DVP5990), this player lets you turn off the annoying "Auto Standby" feature that makes it turn itself off if you pause and wander away for a while. The option is right there on the first tab of prefs.
