Very Good

I bought this last month. It has worked great with XP and Vista. Nice housing and very silent. A great buy.

Capable switch hitter

I received this drive yesterday and, after some difficulty, got it connected it via eSata. It worked quite well with very fast transfers compared to USB 2.0, which also worked fine when I connected it that way. The initial eSata problem apparently involved a loose cable connection to the PCIe controller card's port; with that fixed, only one USB port connection was required for power in eSata mode, though a double-connection USB cable is supplied just in case you need two.

Inside the rather nice leatherette-clad casing is a Samsung HM320JI 2.5" drive -- an eSata Generation 1 device with 1.5 gb/sec transfer rates compared to the 480 mb/sec standard for USB 2.0. You won't get the 3.0 gb/sec speed of Generation 2 devices, but it's definitely much faster than USB.

For the $77 I paid (now even less), and with the two transfer modes (not to mention the supplied carry case that matches the casing) this seems a much better deal than, say, the Western Digital 320 GB equivalent that is priced about 20% higher on Amazon. If it holds up over time, then it's a really great deal.

eSATA didn't work

(2 out of 5) by Kenneth D. Lee on Nov 18, 2008 (Hattiesburg, MS USA)
This product does NOT have an external power supply, but relies on the USB port for power. This is a good thing for a portable drive, in fact was a major reason I bought it. However, eSATA ports do not supply power, so you have to hook up the USB as well when using eSATA. This unit does come with a two-pronged USB cable that helps to provide more power when necessary. I tried this, but unfortunately, nothing I tried would get the drive to mount when I had the eSATA port connected. Thus, I returned mine as defective.

If you don't care about the eSATA problem, however, I would definitely recommend this drive. But, since I was looking specifically for an eSATA drive, I rate it at 2 stars.

Like this

Love it. Works great. The esata overrides the hard drive on my computer and will not recognize as a external drive...good be good for booting if there is a problem with your os.

Love this drive...quiet, good capacity and is compact.

Nice drive...free viral bonus!

(1 out of 5) by S. BIRCH on Feb 14, 2009 (In this world, but not of it)
The good:
The drive worked. I plugged it in eSATA, and it promptly started up.

The bad:
The first thing that happened after it connected was McAfee quarantined trojan horse files on the brand new drive. Not sure if it was simply that I got a drive someone returned...or if this was a free bonus from the manufacturer...but regardless, Amazon is getting the drive back, and Im looking for a different vendor.
