Great for the price!

Has a nice sleek look to it. Mirror like finish on the back side of it. Love everything about it except for the slow scrolling, unlike the ipod nano where you can scroll quickly through your playlist by thumbing the wheel. With this, it takes forever to get to certain songs. Does anyone know how to get the scroll feature to be faster? Maybe there's a way and I don't know about it.

Overall, big bang for the buck!

Video is confusing, but works...

(3 out of 5) by William R. Holderness on Feb 4, 2009 (Corvallis, OR)
I just bought the this media player. For the price, it's a pretty good deal. The thing holds 4 GB of media, can pick up radio stations, plays video and audio, and even displays text files.

The touch screen, like mentioned in other reviews, is kind of touchy, no pun intended. Some of the functions are also kind of screwy. For example, you can't turn the volume up and down if you are browsing through other songs. You have to go back to the now playing list to do that. I had an second generation ipod nano (which I gave to my girlfriend) and it had a wheel to turn the volume up and down regardless of what menu you were in. This player has no such thing.

The sound quality on it is pretty good (including the radio reception). The ear buds included are OK (kind of big, but they work well).

The main problem with this is the getting the video to work. It took my roommate and I about three hours to finally figure it out. First, the video converter they included is practically worthless. I ended up downloading "any video converter" from downloads.com.

The video requirements for it to play on the player are: 220x176 resolution and 30 frames per second. Additionally it has to be a .avi file and has to use xvid encoding.

They say that in order to put media on the player, you have to use windows media player. It works fine for audio, but it sucks for adding video. If the video is converted through their program it won't sync. If the video is converted through a different program and has the right requirements, it still won't sync.

What we had to do is find some unconverted video that would actually sync. Once it synced, we found out it wouldn't play. But, it did create a "Video" folder on the device.

Once the "Video" folder is created on the device, you can manually drag in videos through the "open device to view files" option. You just drag the files into the video folder and they show up in the movie section, and, with few exceptions, they play, considering you convert the files appropriately.

So, after you get the video folder created, open "any video converter" choose the file you want to convert, choose the "custom avi" profile on the right-hand side, go down the right-hand side and change the resolution to 220 x 176 and the framerate to 30, and then hit convert. After it gets done converting, drag the new file into the video folder and it should work.

Hopefully, this saves someone the 3-4 hours it took us to figure this out. You'd think Coby would be smart enough to just develop a video converter that worked, or at least worked well with the Vista version of Windows Media Player. But, then again, this we bought this thing for less than 50 bucks.

YOTA911

the coby mp 705(4g) is slightly fatter than the nano, but not by much(by 1/4 of a cm.). it has never glitched on me, or stoped working, like san disk. it does movies, music(wma, mp3), pictures, and text. i do not believ that ipod does text. all you have to do is go to my computer on your start menue of your computer, click on the picture of an mp3(mp3 must be pluged in) and then you can drag any folder onto the computer. the player has a power-hold butin, you slide it and hold it to the right to turn on and off, and push it to the right to hold(as long as hold is on any of the butins pressed have no effect). the butins on the player react to the static that runs through your fingers, so that if something else presses it, like your wallet nothing will happen. overall the coby 705 mp3 looks and works amazingly, and at 1/3 the price of an ipod. it also runs off of a great rechargable basttery that is built in, just like the ipod. the screen is full color and high quality, i can easily read text on it. DONT WASTE MONY ON AN iPOD, THIS DOES IT ALL AT 1/3 THE PRICE.
update:
after owning this for a year now i have encountered one glitch, the coby does not work very well with a windows vista computer(all the songs i moved into different folders are now glitchy), good thing i have windows xp. also, since the touchpad is activated by the static in your fingers, a static shock will make it turn off.

GREAT CHOICE

(5 out of 5) by Sarah Olmedo on Sep 25, 2008 (San Diego, CA)
I am very pleased with my choice to purchase a COBY player. This is the first mp3 player I have purchased for myself. Two of my children have ipod's and I have spent a fortune on buying music for them. With the 4GB COBY player I was able to use Windows Media Player (much easier to use) to load all of my favorite CD's onto the player with room to spare. I have about 40 CD's on it now and have only used a little over 1GB. Also I am not limited to using i-tunes for downloads from the internet.
I found the player easy to use and I like the lightweight sleek feel.
The next time I am in the market to buy an MP3 player I will defiantly purchase a COBY player.

Not worth it.

Looks nice but when I try to download music the wire seems to have a short in it and disconnects from my computer. Also the last time I tried to turn it off it froze on me and wouldn't shut down. I think it is cheaply made and can't handle the everyday use of a MP3. It also smudges very easily. Wouldn't buy it again.
