a bit disappointed

(3 out of 5) by vaultman110 on Mar 10, 2009 (seattle, wa)
After all the high praise for this unit on Amazon and other sites I had high expectations. I was hoping for denon sound at an onkyo price. This did not come close to the sound of the Denon D-M37 at magnolia av but its good enough. I am however having a peculiar problem with mp3 discs. It seems that for some reason I have not figured out yet that it will not play some mp3 discs. The onkyo manual says that it will not play discs unless the .mp3 or .wma file extensions are present in the file name so I thought at first that may be it however three pc's and two other players with mp3/wma capability says they are fine and the extention are there. Maybe it doesn't like verbatim media but thats a pretty decent brand of cd-r's. I'm lost to explain the problem. What am I missing? Anyway, be aware before you buy.

good quality and sound, speakers a little too big

(4 out of 5) by C. Lai on May 22, 2009
After using this system for the past 2 months, I find it to be of good quality and sound is good. It is not expensive and sounds way better than the cheap stuff. However, the speakers seem just a little too big. Wish Onkyo would make the speakers smaller, then it would be really a mini system. Also wish it has a usb port.

high quality/low price

(5 out of 5) by Bill Roper on Apr 19, 2009 (USA)
so often these days the low to mid-priced electronics are of saddening quality. this onkyo system is a delightful exception! for a bookshelf stereo, the sound is quite nice, a bit bright and not much of a bottom for the bass, but very clean and true. the receiver is a tad deep to easily fit on a 12" shelf, but no big deal. the build quality of the receiver and speakers is outstanding. the only thing i don't like is the need for the onkyo docking station for the ipod. an auxiliary input is standard these days on most component systems, and one can't help but feel the pressure to buy the manufacturer's accessory.

Best sound system I've ever heard or owned

(5 out of 5) by M. Goldie on Feb 27, 2009
This stereo was as good as everyone who reviewed it, said it was! First of all it weighs alot, which tells me it's not a piece of junk. Very, very easy to set up. And the sound is unbelievable. For the money, you won't be able to find a better sound.

No disappointments

I've owned a Onkyo stereo/surround sound unit in the past. After downsizing and moving into a small condo in Hawaii I needed something smaller. This unit packs a lot of punch for its size. It is also an attractive unit and fits nice in its limited space. The sound quality is typical Onkyo quality and fills the room. The remote is easy to program and easy to use. Speakers are very good though you may want to purchase a spool of speaker wire prior to the units arrival. The wire that ships with the unit is a little on the short side. Bottom line-buy it.
