Other than the relative privacy because MURS frequencies aren't in common use (yet), there's not much benefit with these particular radios over FMRS. The range is about the same, namely a few hundred yards of reliable communications and about 1/4 mile of 50% communications.
Great deal with an excellent NOAA Weather Radio thrown in

The radios operate in the VHF MURS band and transmit 500mw on high power.
Channels 1 through 3 are strictly MURS channels while Channels 4 & 5 might be shared with Business Band Radio users in your area.
At only 1/2 watt output, the 5 mile range claimed is probably stretching it unless you are talking from a mountain top. In any event, these are very inexpensive alternatives to the GMRS radios being offered on the market today and the NOAA Weather Radio receiver is excellent - I get much better NOAA reception on this radio than on all of my GMRS radios combined. At this low price, these radios would be an excellent choice for a family Hurricane/Emergency kit given the excellent reception of the NOAA Weather stations.

A clear opportunity
(5 out of 5) by Mikel on Jul 11, 2008This is a fantastic value... A True Liquidation Price.. This item is Brand new in a sealed hard plastic cover. Never been opened. Sells for up to $60.00 retail. Batteries are not seen in the package and therefore are not included. We believe the batterries to be AA's , nothing special.
