A perfect DVD player for serious movie fans
I got this DVD player with two goals in mind. First, I just purchased my first high def television. Although I plan on buying a Sony Playstation 3 in the very near future to play Blu-ray discs on, I own several hundred older DVDs that either cannot be replaced or that I couldn't afford to replace even if Blu-ray alternatives are available. So I wanted an Up-conversion DVD player that would maximize the potential of the discs I already owned. This player does an outstanding job of this. I've retained my former DVD player because it is a DVD player/VHS player. The difference between DVDs played on that player and this one is striking.
The second goal was to get a player that would play discs from any region. I'm a big lover of British cinema. [...]. For instance, I love the films of British comic actors like Alastair Sim and Will Hay. You can find only very little Sim and absolutely no Hay in Region 1 format discs. But now I can order those discs from Amazon UK in Region 2 format. All those films I saw ages ago in various film societies will now be available for me to own.
I will add that one reviewer mentioned how flimsy the disc tray is. I will second that. It hasn't broken but it definitely feels delicate. Apart from this caveat this is close to a perfect player.

Pretty nice DVD player
Small slick DVD player. Does all as promised. Play PAL and NTSC DVD's, upscales output up to 1080p. I really can tell difference compare to regular progressive scan DVD players.
Single HDMI cable is the great way to reduce cable clutter.
Plays Divx files!!! I have tones of international staff downloaded from the Internet, now I can enjoy on 52' tv.
Plays files from USB flash drives. This is great! I do not need DVD burner to move files to DVD player. 8gb flash drive will do it. I even was able to attach USB card reader to play digital picture from camera on TV.
Firmware of DVD player is upgradeable.

it does it all!
It's a DVD player that does it all. All-regions, multi-formats. And it's sleek and stylish. The only area that can use some improvement is the system could be more responsive. The tray open/close has a little lag.

Excellent DVD Player
This DVD player plays DVDs from any region. Definitely use it with an HDMI cable. With HDMI and HD TV, the player does a great job of upconverting the picture to high definition. DVDs look great. This is a great deal. I would definitely recommend buying this.

Philips Does NOT Make Code Free DVD Players
PHILIPS Hi-Def 1080p Up-Conversion Multi Region Codefree DVD Player with DivX HDMI and USB. Plays PAL/NTSC DVDs From Any Region I bought this player in October, 2008. It stopped working in January 2009. I had sent in the warranty card to Philips and contacted them. Philips sent me a "reconditioned" player as a replacement. That was bad enough. I then discovered that it was a Region 1 only player. I contacted Philips and they informed me that they do not make multi-region or code free DVD players. They claimed someone had "altered" their player. Amazon sells this player through "VCT Electronics". It is my guess that VCT alters the DVD players. I contacted them concerning this and have not received a response. It's past the 90 days and I wasted time with Philips, so I am out of luck. If you want a Code Free DVD player with the proper warranty and all don't buy this player. My suggestion is check with the manufacturer before you buy to see if the product truly is what Amazon is saying it is. And not an altered product that the manufacturer won't stand behind if you have a problem. And you won't get ripped off by VCT Electronics.
