Died after a year

(1 out of 5) by Julia Lopez on Aug 18, 2009 (Los Angeles, CA)
I bought this laptop from circuit city in June 2008. August 2009 my screen goes blank, no sound. the CPU on my graphics card is apparently dead or something like that and from what I've been told, I would have to replace the motherboard to fix the problem which would be more expensive than buying a new laptop.

This is not my first HP to die after a year and some months. My first HP laptop died out after like 15 months.

My brother also had two HP laptops and both died out after a year and some months.

I don't recommend HP laptops. Get an acer or something else that is more reliable to last more than a few years.

At least I have my hard drive. I am going to piece my old HP laptop out and sell some of the parts separately. I feel I should get something back for a laptop that barely lasted a year.

Isn't it lovely how HP laptops have a reputation for lasting just over a year before degrading or dying out? By then the 1 year warranty that comes with the laptop has already expired.

My HP laptop is running HOT too.

(2 out of 5) by Tracy Shintaku on Aug 1, 2009 (Silicon Valley)
This is actually my 2nd HP.. I have a 32-vista version as well as a 64-bit vista version.. (HW wise they are both the dv pavillion series, each 17" screen.) I loved my first, but since the memory was not upgradeable, I bought the newer one with 4GB ram a few months back. I don't know why, but recently I noticed that my dv9000 is running the fan at full tilt and it is very hot.. too hot to sit on my lap. (My DIY solution is to run it on a cookie cooling rack...)

I am paranoid this one is going to blow a gasket. Has anyone been able to find a suitable professional solution for keeping it cool?

no power $600+ repair latent design problem

(3 out of 5) by william henderson on Jun 17, 2009 (md)
Laptop is everthing I wanted. Was not aware of the problem with shut downs due to ac input problems (e.g acring etc0 known when you search the web. Mine lasted for 6 mos. If you buy, get the extended warrenty since the est. repair cost is $600+. I normally buy from Amazon but Tiger direct had a better price for refurb unit. Never had a problem before with Amazon for Tiger. For a REfurb unit believe Tiger should have fixed this know latent design defect during refurb.

A perfect laptop for Linux

(5 out of 5) by Renaud Olgiati on May 17, 2009 (Asuncion, Paraguay)
For the information of other Linux users, KUbuntu (H) and Mandriva 2008.1 installed on this machine with only one slight setup problem, in that for Mandriva you must download (from the PLF site) the latest non-free Nvidia drivers for the video to display all its possibilities.

All other peripherals are recognized and configurated straight out of the box, no problem whatsoever.
