Great product for a good price
It amazes me how people don't do their research or read a products description before buying. And then are dumb enough to let us all know that they are unhappy with their dumb mistake. So many complain here that the HDMI is Pass-Thru, yet its stated in the products description. So buy the next unit up, get an extra 10 watts and no pass for $159 more, dumb. I had to purchase 2 audio optical lines to get sound back through the AV, total cost $14. This system sounds great, is easy to set up, and has a lot of features for a modest price. If you can still find one get it you won't be disappointed. I'm no novice I have 3 surround sound AVs and this is the 4th, and the sound is as good as my AV that cost $600. some of the negative reviews are real a reflection of the person not the product. Its kind of like on some of the reviews for computer peripherals you always have some idiot that has a 386 with Windows 95 complaining why something made for systems 10 generations newer isn't working on their antique.

High end sound - low price
After reading consumer reports that this was a very good receiver for the price, I purchased one from Amazon. I found the quality to be very good and the instruction manual easy to follow. I did use the enclosed mic and let the receiver auto set-up do all the calculations for distance, level, speaker size and frequency. My system has five speakers and a sub and was done in around 15 minutes. I followed up with my radio shack sound level meter and all speaker levels were very close. There are several sound settings for music and movies. I found pro-logic II to do very well with music and the digital auto setting for my dvd's. Overall a very good sounding receiver that is easy for the average consumer to operate.

Onkyo TX-SR506 7.1 Channel Review By D.Watson
Onkyo TX-SR506 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) To much auto adjusting, the auto mic does not tune to my surround sound hearing prefferance.Re placed my TX-727 I had for yrs.and should have never been replaced as for as I am concerned Why change something as sollid and good performing for this audysy crap so that some geek can say he has it,give me ole school proven product I say,and by the way onkyo needs to shape up there operating manuals on setting up the speaker wiring sounds like they contracted with a non english speaking country to write. It may cost more to have it done in the USA but at least it would make sence and be cheaper in the long run.Shape up Onkyo USA.This is the USA.
Better Than I Ever Expected
This was an emergency purchase as my old Technics system blew up. I couldn't be more pleased! The Technics was a ProLogic simulated surround system, so this was my first experience with true surround sound, and I just can't get enough of it. The sound quality is great, crystal clear and rich. It automatically detects the best listening mode for a source (for instance, if you are watching a DVD the Onkyo can tell if it is a 2.0, or Dolby 5.1, etc) so you are not forever changing the sound settings. As a side note, if you experience an echo while watching a DVD, make sure the volume is turned all the way down on the TV itself. The Onkyo came with a set-up MIC which allows the system to measure the volume of each speaker from 3 listening positions in the room, then automatically balances them. Another cool feature is the "Zone 2" for which you can power a 2nd set of stereo speakers in a different room, and although I have not tried it, apparently you can have one source playing on "Zone 2" (like the radio) while using a different source (like the TV or DVD) in the main room. My only minor complaints would be that the display is classic mint green rather than white (though it can be dimmed, which is neat) and the remote control is awfully "busy". It is capable of being a universal remote, but in my opinion it is too small to have 50 child-sized buttons on it. Finally, to Amazon's credit, I chose 7-10 day Supersaver Shipping, and the Onkyo was delivered by FedEx in 3 days! I would definitely recommend this product!
Worked OK for me
I'm no NASA specialist. For what I needed this AV amp to do, it was fine for me. If you're looking for the ultimate HD high end whatever, read this closely to see if this is what you're looking for. For an average user like myself, is was great for the price. By the way, my other Onkyo receiver is still working in my living room and it's 20 years old now ( I just use it for sound not HDMI). I'm happy with what I got here.
