Excellent wireless adapter!

(5 out of 5) by Chad L. on Nov 7, 2008 (Seattle, WA)
I have been using the Hawking HWUN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N USB Adapter in conjunction with a Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router (model # F5D8230-4) for about 3 weeks now, and it has performed great. Setup with the included wireless utility was not quite plug-and-play, but certainly not difficult. You just have to remember to save your Wi-Fi setup as a profile in the utility so that it remembers your settings every time you start up your computer. I believe another reviewer mentioned this tidbit.

I bought this adapter to replace a 50 ft. ethernet cable that was running from my office down the hallway to my bedroom, and I get comparable upload and download speeds (measured using the included utility). I have no problems playing FPS games like Battlefield 2 and CounterStrike over the Wi-Fi connection, which was one of my main concerns and a large measure of how satisfied I would be with the adapter's performance. The router gets a thumbs up here.

I find the Wi-Fi utility it comes with to be very informative. It provides a bar graph for Link Quality, Signal Strength for each of the 2 antennas, and Noise Level. My adapter is approximately 30 feet from my router, through 3 walls, and I always get 100% Link Quality, 90 to 100% Signal Strength on both antennas, and around a 25% Noise Level, which it tells me is Low (a good thing!). The utility also tells me the Link Speed (Tx and Rx: 54Mbps, apparently limited by my pre-N router) and Actual Throughput (comparable to what I was getting with my Cat5 cable). While it would be expected for me to have such a great signal from only 30 feet away, I have also read that this adapter performs well at much farther distances.

This adapter gets my recommendation!

We have tried a few other wireless web enhancers. This one works great and without fuss.

worked great!

We have been struggling for months to find a wireless antenna that was strong enough to reach our modem that is in the window of a detached metal garage about 15 feet from our house. This beauty works like a charm. We have never been disconnected due to lack of signal strength. We have even watched whole movies on Netflix without having to stop and wait for it to load. Absolutely love it!

This little gizmo works just as advertized. Installation was a snap and it picks up my 801 N wireless router signal through four walls flawlessly.

My XPS wireless laptop, 60 feet from router was very sluggish, after
setting up the Hawking, now it's just as fast as a wired connection.
Very satisfied with it. Worth the money if your wireless connection is
s l o w....
