JVC UXG28 - an average mini-stereo system
This item was purchased to replace a 15-year-old Sony boombox that finally stopped working.
Initial setup was easy - plug in, connect antennae (1 AM, 1 FM) and turn on.
Radio reception is fine, equivalent to the boombox it was replacing. The AM antenna is cumbersome.
Design: The button functions are hard to see unless looking at them head on. This is because the buttons are convex plastic over the writing which is on a reflective surface - when you look at an angle, the text bends. After you memorize the location of the buttons this isn't really an issue, but it's a bad design. I like the up-front USB and 1/8" audio inputs, which make it convenient to tie in an external audio source.
Sound quality: Average. Good mid-range and upper bass, but you need to place near a back wall to get any bass lower than ~100hz. Vocals are clear, and talk radio or audio books are especially nice (not boomy). A built-in multi-function EQ lets you change the configuration. As for treble there is a noticable hiss, even when volume was turned down to zero and/or when CD was paused. The hiss is very apparent within 5 feet of unit, with your ears directly in front of speakers. Across the room (12') the hiss is not very noticeable, and with CD audio playing hiss is well in the background. For the price of this item I would have expected better. His also occurs with USB / MP3 player selection. The ability to place speakers where you need them (with plenty of speaker cable) is nice.

nice unit
Nice shelf system, its small but has good sound and was easy to set up and operate. I like the features and was looking for something to play my mp3 on (not an ipod) this system has been everything i was looking for.

JVC UXG28 Audio Microcomponent System
The system is just what I was looking for. It fits nicely in a limited space, looks good, and produces a great sound for its size. I haven't had any difficulties with it though I haven't used it a lot. The buttons on the middle component are a little difficult to see if you're not looking at them straight on. Depending on the angle, the print refracts. Other than that, everything works well.

Misleading Advertisement
This product is good if you just want a basic radio that doesn't take up space with good. However, YOU CANNOT PLAY YOUR IPOD OR MP3 PLAYER ON IT! If that is your purpose you will have to buy the one for 149.00. The current product description is misleading. I repeat YOU CANNOT PLAY YOUR IPOD OR MP# PLAYER ON THIS RADIO!

what a disappointment
Several years ago, I purchased a similar compact JVC unit for myself. It's worked well, so when I wanted a radio/CD player for my dad for Christmas, I ordered this one.
What an embarrassing disappointment! No matter where we put the unit and the antenna, there was a significant hiss. Worse yet, the CD player simply didn't work--we couldn't get any sound. After about a half an hour on terminal hold with the JVC "service" center, we got several suggestions on how to fix it. They didn't work. We were finally instructed to send the unit to the service center. They refused to pay the postage to fix their defective product.
I'm still waiting for a new or repaired unit so I can complete my dad's Christmas present.
