great little mp3 player

(4 out of 5) by Hoyne on May 9, 2009 (Chicago, IL USA)
i had last year's version ($100+/-) and got it stolen. This is just under $80, pretty much the same model with fancier ear buds and a "noise canceling" switch. That feature is like the 'ole "Loud" button on older stereos, or "Overdrive" on your car (just keep it on and leave it). I don't even care that it's also a video player, I'll probably never waste the space on this device to download AVI videos or clips. I've got 920 songs on mine and that's good enough for me... for now i guess. I manage my playlists on Widows Media Player and haven't had any problems. Besides the few pointless extras, it's a fun, fairly priced little player. It's durable, but keep the Walkman screen protected, because it does scratch easily. thank you for the fast delivery!

Almost perfect!

(4 out of 5) by Eduardo Nietzsche on Mar 3, 2009 (Houston)
The sound quality on this thing is pretty amazing, even with the OEM earbuds...yep, all the reviews were right about that! No it's not REAL "audiophile" sound quality of course, but as close as you'll ever get with the MP3 format. Since I mainly use this for exercise or road trips, I can live with that.

My only quibble is that this player doesn't allow you to delete songs on the fly, this would have been an incredibly convenient timesaver. Also, it doesn't seem to work 100% smoothly with playlists from Windows Media Player 11...I'll keep trying, but right now it's a bit of a pain. I am willing to suffer a little inconvenience than having to install some bloaty Sony software though, and at least I'm not locked into using iTunes as I would've been had I bought an iPod.

The user interface is quite easy to use, I didn't have to refer to the user manual at all to figure it out.

The equalizer is hands down the best I've ever used, and can make cheap $10 headphones sound good---I bought a pair of behind the neck, over the ear Phillips headphones (see my detailed review) for running and working out in the gym (I wanted to save the noise-reducing OEM phones for flights), and with a little tweaking of the EQ I was able to get them to sound almost as good as my $100 Grado SR80s!

The form factor is small, sleek and sexy. I bought an aftermarket rubber case with belt clip, it's so light that I hardly notice it's even there. Makes me laugh out loud when I compare it to the experience of carrying around a cassette Walkman 20 years ago!

Looking back I do wish I'd gotten the 8GB model, 4GBs at 320BR is not quite enough if you want to have a variety of music for different moods and activities. The 16GB version would be great if it weren't so pricey.

Got mine from sonystyle dot com, they were surprisingly cheap with a special sale code. They also carry refurb and clearance models which are also very competitively priced.

Excellent Sound but not an Ipod killer.

(3 out of 5) by John on Feb 21, 2009
This my first mp3 player (except for a $50.00 Samsung player which I returned immediately).
It has a nice feel and is sturdy, having dropped if a few times.

The sound is excellent after you fiddle with the controls a bit.

Size is nice and screen is easily readable. Navigation is also intuitive.

FM tuner has very limited range and it depends on the earbud wire as an antenna, so I am constantly moving the wire around to improve reception even in the gym.

I don't like the earbuds. I find them uncomfortable. The noise cancelling feature is nice, but is only partially effective. It helps but is not a panacea. I would say it knocks out 30-40 % of background noise (the piped in music) when I am at the gym.

My main complaint is the on/off button. You have to press and hold for a second or two to turn it off. However, there is no such delay when turning it on, which is very sensitive and I often find it on in my pocket after I thought I turned it off. Very irritating.

Battery life is not 30+ hours. I use only for music, not video, and I would guess I get about 15-20 hours before a full charge (which takes 24 hours). Some of this may be due to it coming on when I think it is off, but I don't think so.

Being a contrarian, I was looking for an alternative to Ipods which everyone advised me to buy. Maybe I should have listened.

Easy to Use.

(4 out of 5) by Jon D. Lamkins on Jan 12, 2009
Bought these for my daughters and niece for Christmas. Incredibly easy to get up and running. Unload from box, charge via USB port, then copy songs. You can drag and drop, copy, or sync with Media Player. Menus are intuitive and easy to use. Sound quality is fine, however, I wouldn't classify myself as an expect in this area.
