Stopped my Vista crashes!!!

(5 out of 5) by B. Purdy on Jan 31, 2009 (TX)
Perhaps it was just one of those "My BIOS and/or my chipset and/or my RAM" don't get along things. I tried two 1G and two 2G - together and separately, in 2G, 4G, and 6G combinations - sticks of RAM in my eVGA 780i motherboard, and kept having crashes in Vista Ultimate x64. I tried all the clock, voltage, and timing adjustments (and there are plenty on this motherboard, believe me), but could never get it stable. Vista kept crashing, and memtest kept showing errors.

So, I dropped 8GB of this OCZ RAM in, and *boom*, my problem was solved. I haven't tried any overclocking, because stability is more important to me than more FPS in games, and I figure I don't have a lot of leeway with four sticks.

The manufacturer of the other RAM is a well-known brand, which surprised me with failures on two different products (again, two 1G and two 2G) and I haven't had a chance to try them in another mobo to see if it's just a 780i compatibility issue.

Long story short: if you need 8GB of RAM, get a kit that's matched, like this one, rather than buying two separate 4GB kits. Your system will thank you.

great ram

works great on my system and I didn't even need to up the voltage too much to run over clocked.

Improved performed

Memory lets me run Vista without a hiccup. I did need to install SP1 before I could boot into the OS without a BSoD.
