Tiny and Convenient

(5 out of 5) by M. TURNER on May 19, 2008
I've used some of the 'designer' LaCie hard drives for a few years. Hard drives are so cheap these days, the only thing really separating them is the design of the case, so why not get one that looks good on your desk? I bought this hard drive so my wife can make backup clones of her black Macbook. The retractable USB cable is fantastic, the drive is bus-powered so you don't have to ever hunt for any cables. Performance is what you'd expect from a drive of these specs, so we're very satisfied with the purchase.

VERY nice

(4 out of 5) by Matt Albrecht on Oct 1, 2008 (Golden, CO USA)
I love this drive. It spins up much faster than my wall-powered WD external, is VERY light-weight, and the ports are great.
It is brilliant to have the USB cable built into the drive. VERY convenient, as I don't have to carry that around too.
On that note, the thing powers fine from my macbook with just the retractable USB cable, so no power issues there. Obviously does fine with Firewire too.
The firewire is great, and it is nice to have the ability to daisy-chain, although I have no use for that yet.

The included software is no big deal, especially for mac. This was not meant to be a backup disk for me, so the backup software is irrelevant. The programmable button is kind of a gimmick. I would like to program a set of actions to it, which I might (quit iTunes, eject disk) but overall it is not that cool for my uses...

The two gripes I have that keep it from a 5:
> the material is pretty prone to fingerprints (and likely scratches, although I haven't abused it (yet)
>While the cap is a nice feature, it should really be stowable somewhere, like being able to be put on the top end when you are using the ports. Currently, the cap sort of runs around in the carrying pouch or loose on the desk, which just invites it to get lost. I suppose this is just a bit of form over function. Which, on that note, the thing is tiny, sexy, and light, which is nice, but I don't care that much, honestly...

started clicking and wouldnt mount after the second day

(1 out of 5) by Ryan Sharp on Feb 27, 2009 (Santa Ana, CA)
i had high hopes for this drive based on the reviews on here, but after the second day of just sitting on my desk it failed to mount. it made a loud clicking noise and that is about it. luckily amazon's great customer service made it easy to return and get credited back.

Very convenient, impressive design, bad build quality

(3 out of 5) by riceboy on Mar 3, 2009 (SF, CA)
I love how convenient this device is. It's small and you don't have to worry about forgetting a USB cable since its built in.

The cover could have been better designed as it is hard to pull off and can get lost since its a separate piece.

It has a simple design elegance, but it gets lost over time as the shiny plastic scratches very easily.

Also, this could just be the unit I received, but I had to send it back to Lacie (under warranty, and they don't pay for shipping back) because the USB cable broke.

A Class Act

(5 out of 5) by Mike on Jul 4, 2008 (Oxford, OH USA)
As I got more and more sweaty-palmed as my laptop drive filled up, I looked for a fast, compact external drive which would travel well. The Little Disk 250GB is a classy little unit with a pull-out USB connector (but I tend to use the Firewire connection more frequently.) A beautifully designed drive, it more than doubles my laptop's capacity.
