Broke

(3 out of 5) by Mariane Matera on Jul 25, 2009 (Richmond, VA USA)
It's easy to bend the pins in this card reader if you put the card in the wrong way or try to force it. It seems very fragile and cheap, but so far it's been working. One of my camera cards, though, it just refused to mount. I had to go back to the cable to do that one, but now I have another card reader from Kensington I paid more for and that one works.

Add: Since I wrote the review, it broke completely inside. I wish I could give it less stars now, but it won't let me change it. Very clear case here of getting what you paid for.

Do you feel lucky?

I did, so I purchased this item. As soon as I plugged it into my trusty XP machine, it showed up in my list of drives. Then it disappeared. Then Windows spontaneously shut down. Trying again without a USB extension cable gave better results. This time I was able to update my USB driver and transfer a few files very slowly from an SD card using this drive. After 75 MB or so, the device stopped working and gave an error message. The drive was no longer working. After a restart, same results. Later, I was also able to transfer files from an XD card, which was even slower than with the SD but also stopped after 75 MB.

I connected the drive to another computer, with the same slow transfers and cutoffs, but without the spontaneous shut-downs. On reconnecting to the first computer, it finally performed an auto shut-down and wouldn't start again until I reset the BIOS.

Having had the computer case open twice today and spent hours trying to get the device to work, it slowly dawns on me that I've just been burned. My computer isn't top of the line, but it's usually reliable and has no problem with other readers, or with jump drives and the like. It's certainly possible that I'm missing something obvious about getting it to work, even though I've used card readers before and never had a problem. Maybe it's just a faulty unit, but the company website is no help, because there's no company name or logo on the case, no model or serial number. Whoever makes it isn't going out of their way to stand behind it.

I don't expect a lot for the kind of price I paid for this piece of plastic, but having it do no harm would be a minimum.

Maybe I'm just unlucky.

Did'nt work

My MacBook would not recognize this unit. I contacted the supplier and they offered to exchange it. Not worth the time and postage. Spend a little more and get something that works.

THIS PRODUCT WORKS GREAT, BUT WHEN USING IT TO READ A xD PICTURE CARD, THE INSERTION OF THE CARD IS SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT.
IT STILL IS A GOOD BUY FOR THE BUCKS........

not bad at all

i needed a reader for my compact flash cards and this one worked out great and it was a good price. the only reason i put a 4 instead of a 5 was that it seems a little flimsy and it can be a little hard to put the card in. but for the price what can you expect.
