Streaming NAS DVD Backup Files - Works Great!

(5 out of 5) by Daniel B. Cardinal on Oct 22, 2009
I backup my DVDs to a D-Link DNS321 2-Bay network attached storage (NAS) where I have two 1TB drives. This device (DSM-750) streams the media clearly off the NAS as if I was watching the original DVDs. This is the best device by far for playback after recording and then streaming DVD backup files from a shared NAS device.

I use DVDFAB 6 to backup my DVDs to my laptop and then wirelessly transfer them to the NAS. This software allows users to create 3-4 GB no loss VOB files. Why compress when multi TB drives are available. This simple software also allows users to select only the movie portion of the DVD and the language needed for playback. Because I select only the movie, the DSM-750 randomlly selects a default language. Because I only select one language for backup, I don't need to use the DSM-750's remote control to change the language after the movie starts.

I read the original reviews and waited to see what else came out. I only found devices that would stream from dedicated non sharable USB ports. I checked out many products over the last serveral months but I could not find one with better specs. This thing works as advertised. As far as I'm concerned, I waited too long because there are no bugs.

My daughter was working on the family laptop and this device was streaming her school video project to the televison. "Where did you get that" she asked. I was using this device via our router to wirelessly stream the video off her laptop without her knowing.

video issues

(1 out of 5) by M. Johnson on Jun 28, 2009 (Northern VA)
I connected to a dir-655. signal was terrible, the unit was only 1 floor down, 1 room away. Laptop always gets full signal in same spot. I had to get a powerline adaptor to get a signal (defeats the wireless idea) I get pictures, but can get a single video to work, using the media extender nor media player mode. What a waste of money.

D-Link DSM-750, not so good at a very high price!

(2 out of 5) by Loic R. Bourlegat on May 4, 2009 (São José dos Campos, SP Brazil)
The product itself is very beatiful and fits very well to other components. I had the idea to buy the DSM-750 after my DVD player was broken. I was intended to see the movies I already had in my computer (divx), using my '.srt' subtitles and profiting from wireless 802.11n speed. I chose DSM-750, not the DSM-520, due to the Windows Media Center Extender. Since I could see DVD movies on my Desktop Windows Media Center, I thought could replace my old DVD player with DSM-750 only by inserting my DVD in my Desktop and watching it on my TV.
Well, after all, I realized that watch a DVD with DSM-750 was impossible. Even the 'Play DVD' link on Desktop Windows Media Center had disappeared on DSM-750 Windows Media Center Extender. So, renting movies is not possible anymore. I couldn't replace my old DVD player. I think I will have to buy a new one.
Another thing: It's also not possible to load subtitles on Windows Media Center Extender mode. On D-Link Media Lounge mode, it is possible to load it, but once loaded, the movie becomes not flat anymore. I thought it was due to a problem on my connection (Desktop - Router - DSM), so i tried directly inserting a USB flashdrive on DSM-750, but, after many tests, the results are always the same: bad quality on video, the audio stops and sometimes even the movie stops. It seems that the hardware does not support such information at same time.
An issue that disapointed me very much is that, altough DSM-520 can play youtube videos, DSM-750 DOES NOT! I already asked D-Link about that, but, after a very long time to reply, they simply said that DSM-750 does not support Youtube videos.
So, I can't use it as a DVD Player, cannot watch YouTube videos, and also cannot load subtitles (as promised). I'm very disapointed with DSM-750, after paying more than US$ 350,00. For what it does, it should cost not more than US$ 150,00.

Great product when when wired to a network / Wireless is useless

(3 out of 5) by Saverio Strangis on Apr 19, 2009
Pros:
Dual mode.
Works with many servers in medialounge mode WMP11, DLINK Medialounge, PlayOn, HAVA Titanium
Works as a Windows Media Center Extender.
Works great when wired

Cons:
Wireless receiver is poor.
Gets unresponsive or very slow if wireless reception is not good.
Remote control doesn't control other equipment neither has backlight. Hard to use in darkness.

I reccommend to buy this product ONLY for wired network connection. Forget about watching a full uninterrupted movie using the wireless network connection.
I've bought a DLINK DIR-825 dual band N router. Connected the 5GHz band dedicated for this unit and couldn't get a stable signal to stream composite TV (don't even dream about streaming HDTV wirelessly with this unit).
I had to buy a bridge DLINK DAP-1522 to be able to provide a good wireless communication. The MCE is only 20 ft away from the router in the same floor. DLINK made me waste lots of time tuning and nothing helped. With the DAP-1522 I've tuned it in a breeze. That means that the wireless receiver of the DSM-750 is poor designed.
Finally, I end up wiring my home for CAT6 and it works fine now. I don't understand why 6 Mbps internet bandwidth doesn't work well over a 300 Mbps WiFi network. My WiFi works fine for streamming TV to the UVERSE set top boxes.

Note that, most of the problems other people report in the forums are due to bad network tuning.

Nevertheless, It steel gets unresponsive every now and then. DLINK didn't update the firmware in a while to solve its issues. That means, they aren't planning to support this product for too long.

They are still shipping defective units

(2 out of 5) by Mark Giglio on Mar 23, 2009
It's 3/22/09 and I thought I'd take a chance as amazon was 30$ cheaper than ordering from Dlink directly, but I received one of the defective units. It will not connect to windows media center so I am going to have to ship it back to dlink for repair/replacement. I think that dlink ought to offer free shipment for this. I'm supprised that defective units are still being shipped.

My reveiw of other features like medialounge:
1.) will not seek, FF/RW or time seek for mkv files
2.) will not time seek for HD wmv files
3.) will not stream HD mkv files through the wireless n connection 5 feet away from a Linksys WRT610n dual band router.
4.) Does not calculate bitrate and file size for mkv files correctly resulting in premature ending of the video.
5.) GUI is decent
6.) remote is pretty good
7.) I would not recommend buying this unit from amazon unless they can assure you that the unit is known not defective. They should have gone through the process of contacting dlink and returning the units that needed replacement already, I am very disappointed.
