Before I buy...

(5 out of 5) by George Porraz on Apr 20, 2008 (Lompoc, CA USA)
I currently don't own one, but I've been looking at this little machine for a while. Mostly, I'd like to have a secondary computer to take along with me for my writing and recreation (such as youtube, myspace, managing my mp3s and photos, etc). Ideally I would like to know a few things about this little machine. The size appeals to me, but I am the type that would rather see one in action. I have not been able to locate one locally, so if someone who owns it could send me a personalized email to [...] I would greatly appreciate one! I see that there is no CD-ROM drive to it, which I suppose is fine, as long as an external one can be connected... but will it be able to support some games such as the Sims 2 or Rollercoaster Tycoon? How about managing your iTunes/iPod on the go? If not, I'm not too concerned. I have a primary home computer anyway. What can I expect from this machine? It is already saved in my wish list and the only thing left for me to do is hit the "buy now" button. What I see, and what I like so far are the price, the size, and the portability. How about the performance, though..?

Install Software?

(5 out of 5) by Customer on Mar 5, 2008
Does anyone know if regular software can be installed onto this computer? I know at 2 GB to 8 GB options, disk space is an issue, but I have a 32 MB program I would like to use and was wondering if it can be installed onto this computer. I can't find this information anywhere, even on the ASUS web site.

Thank you.

bad build quality, almost seems more like a toy

(2 out of 5) by The Count on Feb 23, 2008 (Raleigh, NC, USA)
when we got the eeepc today my 15 year old daughter's first question was if it is a toy computer or a real one. most reviews here feel that $300 is sooooo cheap. actually for what you are getting its not.

PRO: i was kind of impressed about the way linux was implemented on this little machine. the small display is actually not bad, bright and sharp. has just about every program you would need on the road already installed, like skype, chat clients, word processing, wlan, games, media players, etc.

CON: the look and especially the feel is somewhat 'cheap'. after only a couple hours, the mouse keys stopped to work as did the tapping function on the keypad. big bummer. the screen and the keyboard is really too small to do any kind of serious work for any length of time.

all my other computers are macs, i might just be totally spoiled by the (usually) excellent apple build quality.

UPDATE: after pondering if i should return this for an exchange or refund i decided to return it. for only $100 more i bought a certified reconditioned dell inspiron 1525 laptop with 15" wxga, 120gb hard drive, etc.

Item listed as "in stock," but Amazon is slow to ship.

(3 out of 5) by S. T. K. on Mar 26, 2008 (Columbus, Ohio USA)
It should be pointed out to prospective buyers of the eee PC from Amazon, that as of March 24th, Amazon listed this item as in stock and ready to ship. However, since processing the credit card payment, Amazon has pushed the shipment date back to March 31st. Not the delivery date, but the date it is estimated to be shipped from Amazon. It's funny how that date gets pushed back /after/ the card had been charged.

The "fine print" of Amazon's shipping policies states that delivery time can only shortened through selecting various delivery carriers/methods, and that preparation for shipping remains independent of delivery method chosen. The fine print also states that once the "shipping process" has started (apparently a term used to describe the seven day wait before an "in stock" item is shipped), an order cannot be cancelled.

As such, it is my recommendation to either select your shipping options carefully (according to post-payment communications from Amazon, I'll be waiting up to 18 before I receive the product), or place the order with other well-known online retailers who offer the product at the same price and shipping rates.

child's toy

(1 out of 5) by Charles F. Cavanaugh on May 21, 2008 (Rhode Island)
cute little item, great for children. This was strictly an impulse buy; don't really know why I bought it - was fascinated by the ads and wanted to know more. Sorry I bought it!
