Great Filtering Capability...Poor Quality Hardware

(3 out of 5) by N. Najim on Nov 24, 2009
We watch all the movies that are PG-13 and above with this player. With 2 kids in the household, it's the only way to watch movies with objectionable material. The PG rated movies and below, we get the Blu Ray discs and watch it on the Samsung Blu Ray player. Why? Well, the picture quality of this DVD player is not that great. I wish the company would come up with a newly designed player with HDMI capability. I'm feeding this DVD player into the Harman AVR 254 and upscaling it to improve the picture. It helps a little, but then when we watch the same movie on the Samsung Blu Ray player, the picture quality is a big improvement. However, it does what is advertises - it allows you to adjust the level of profanity, nudity and voilence from an easy to follow on screen menu.

Pros - Great filtering capability. Easy to use. Fairly priced.

Cons - 'OK - I guess' video quality. No HDMI connections.

Although, I care a lot about video and sound quality in my home theater setup, it is far more important what my kids watch. I'm hoping Clearplay comes up with a better quality product with similiar filtering capability. Until then, this does the job better than any other product in the market.

BUYER BEWARE

(1 out of 5) by Corey Staheli on Nov 16, 2009 (Las Vegas, Nevada)
Buyer beware...If you are a new customer to Clearplay they treat you like gold. However once you become an existing customer you get treated like garbage. For instance I sent my clearplay back to them for replacement in Sept. I was told they would fix it and have it back to me, if not I would get a new one. It is now mid November and they haven't even sent an email saying "hey it's delayed"..I've had to call them multiple times and get the run around after being on hold for hours at a time. Today I was on hold for an hour to try and get status when they might ship my player, I got tired of holding and pressed one instead of 3 for existing customers and I got right through..NICE HEH...New customers get right through but existing customers..>JUST WAIT!! I spoke to a rep on Sat. and she told me all of the players that they have recieved with this current shipment are being shipped to new customers..That they are not shipping to existing customers yet...DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE? IF YOU CAN'T SUPPORT YOUR CURRENT CUSTOMER NEEDS/DEMANDS , WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU GET MORE CUSTOMERS!! SO BEWARE...ONCE YOU BECOME AN "EXISTING" CUSTOMER YOU ARE NOW AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PRIORITY LIST AS FAR AS SUPPORT, REPLACEMENT PLAYERS ETC.. THESE PLAYERS ARE JUNK AND DIE OFTEN..WISH I COULD RECOMMEND ANOTHER COMPANY...BUT..

Nice Idea, but Player Might Die On You, Filters Sometimes Don't Load

(2 out of 5) by Joseph Geniec on Sep 25, 2009 (Indiana, USA)
The idea sounds wonderful. But here's my experience:

1. I've had a lot of problems getting the filters to load on the player at times- sometimes it would just hang when I'd put the USB filter stik into the DVD player.

2. I really liked the DVD player for a while (it even had an optical out + component video), but.... the player itself died after about 9 months. Plugging it in now does nothing, and it has my DVD prisoner inside. Clearplay only gives a 90-day warranty, so beware! I had the "updated" model DVD player as well- CP427BUSB that's supposed to "resolve all the problems."

3. However, if you're after the 90 day mark, they'll usually offer you another "free" DVD player if you buy another year's service though. (about the cost of the DVD player, roughly.) Given #1 above though, I decided to let dead dogs lie. You'll have to ask yourself whether you want to take the chance that they'll continue to be nice enough to send you new players.

I hope these guys get their act together because their business model seems like it's really a good idea, and there's definitely a market for this. They need to take the hit for bad merchandise and not push that off on the customer though.

Great Idea! Terrible Equipment! Terrible Customer Service!

(1 out of 5) by K. Casper on Sep 9, 2009
This is a great idea, and we enjoy using it when the machine is working. But good luck if the Clear Play DVD player quits working. Ours quit working less than 2 months after getting it and it took over 6 months and who knows how many phone calls to get ours replaced. We were told that the replacement player would be a new upgraded model. It looks like the same cheep one. From what I have heard from other Clear Player customers we are not the only ones who have had bad luck with customer service and getting a player that actually works.
