I recently got a mini-laptop and I needed a CD drive in order to use CDs. I didn't need to load any drivers and it worked just fine. I don't use it every day, but It is handy when I just need to use the CD. The drive is loud but it works perfectly.

piece of crap
I have tried and tried and tried to get this thing to work. it says that it is working properly and that everything is installed correctly. Yet I can't any type of disk to run in the cd drive. I put a disk in and it spins then stops. When i try to use it it says that there is no disk in the drive. I have tried everything that i know how to do to get this to work. I am going to be sending this back and trying to either get my money back or find a new driver.
I am totally disappointed in this product and DO NOT recommend it

I'm in the "Didn't Work" category
Plugged it in- light went on and I heard it spin...and that's about it. Tried both cables supplied with unit- same deal. Tried plugging it into my desktop...nada! No real documentation of any use is included with the unit (nothing with any real helpful info) and interestingly enough, no contact information for customer support. As far as I can tell, I just bought a box that lights a green LED for a couple seconds after you plug it in. Not much of a deal for twenty bucks....
You get what you pay for
I bought the External CD drive for $16.25.
There was no installation CD, no problem.
The item is defective (doesn't close) no problem.
If I hold the unit closed, it reads the CD.
For the money, it will do (to load software onto a netbook).
The unit was shipped fast. Who needs total functionality.
Enjoy

External 24X Slim CD-ROM drive is a perfect accessory for a Netbook!
I wanted an optical drive for my Acer Aspire One (10.5-inch) and didn't want a DVD writer, so I opted for this little wonder. I ordered one via Amazon (seller was PowerOptical) and in 2 days it was in my hands...frankly, I was astonished at the sheer speed of the delivery.
I opened the box and pulled out the CD-ROM drive...no manual or software was provided, but that was no problem...the drive came with two cables, one a USB data cable, and the other is a USB power cable (it is the one with the round plug, whereas the data cable's plug is squared-off).
Windows XP instantly installed the drivers and voila, I was off and running, installing some old backup software onto my Acer's HD.
I've used this little CD drive for installing software and for playing music CDs and, so far, it has performed flawlessly, even with the one (data) cable alone, powered via the USB port on the Acer.
I got mine via PowerOptical and, with shipping, it came to just $20.98...at that price, no Netbook owner/user should be without one!
