Save Your Spine - Buy It
I use my laptop 12-14 hours a day, and without a stand I have to lean over quite a bit because I'm tall. I was getting a very stiff upper back and neck, to the point that it hurt to turn my head to the side.
I looked at a lot of laptop stands, but all of them were either too expensive (>$30), too flimsy, or too small for my behemoth laptop (a Clevo D900K). My laptop weighs 13+ lbs, and I wasn't going to trust it to some lightweight plastic.
So I did what any self-respecting geek would do, and built my own custom laptop stand out of extruded aluminum and Erector set pieces. It worked fine, and I built a second one for work.
I used these for 2 years, but then yesterday I saw this Rubbermaid stand in Wal-Mart for $17. My coworker bought one; I tried it with my laptop and it was big and sturdy enough, and the rest is history. I went back this morning and bought three for myself. This thing holds my laptop securely - I mean it's rock-solid - and it gets it higher than my custom one. For $17 you can't go wrong, and your neck will thank you!

Absolutely love it!
When I bought this stand I was somewhat skeptical whether it would be useful, but after using it for a couple weeks, I absolutely love it. It brings my laptop up to eye level when I sit at the table or my desk. As a side benefit, it allows better air circulation so my laptop's fans are able to work more efficiently and my laptop is cooler. It does tilt the keyboard at a slightly strange angle, so I would recommend a separate keyboard and mouse. If you have a smaller laptop (one of the 12 inch or smaller ones), the stand may look a little goofy because it will be a lot wider than your laptop but it will still be as functional as ever.
The all metal stand is very sturdy. I have a rather heavy 5 year old laptop currently sitting on it and it isn't going anywhere. It is easily adjusted. This is one "tech gadget" that I am confident will hold up to some abuse.
About the only thing this stand isn't good for is travel. It is pretty heavy and doesn't fold up flat so throwing it in your laptop bag isn't really an option--but you don't buy an all metal laptop stand for travel.

It's good, really.
I bought this stand because of the wire mesh that the laptop sits on. I've had others that heated up while I was working. It can adjust to several different angles, but one day I proped it all the way up and started typing, I was hooked. The screen is in my face and the keyboard is visible without having to look down. It's comfortable, and doesn't hurt my wrists. It has two soft foam bumpers to protect the laptop, the unit sits nicely on the table and doesn't slide while I'm typing. On the back it has a cable wrangler to keep the spaghetti in order.
I'm happy with this product. All the materials, mostly powder coated metal, are light but strong, it will last for years.

This is fantastic
I've been using this stand for about three years now. I bought one for my laptop at home and like it so much that I bought one for work as well. It's sturdy, well-made and inexpensive. I use mine to bring the screen up to eye level, and I use a remote keyboard and mouse when I've got my laptop on the stand.
