Here's the skinny. It works fine and it has all the software you need right on it. It really does work with just the one usb cable on a modern computer (I presume one with USB 2). There is a second cable for power-only USB if your computer can't do both on the same port. I would feel confident gambling that any computer in the past 2 years can handle one cable.
Anyway, this thing is silent. The only problem is that it's kind of slow. I don't think it's LaCie's fault. I'm doing Time Machine (Mac OS X Leopard) and it's going about 3MB/sec. I have a MacBookPro so I could have gotten Firewire 800 but I didn't think it would be this slow. If I did this again, I would get one with Firewire 800 for about $40 more.
BTW, I like that this, unlike the LaCie Little Disk, has no direct attached cable. My fear with that one is that the cable could break and there would be no way to replace the cable. This is a simple little guy that works great.
Small but perfectly formed for the back up novice
I was having serious problems with backing up my files to an external disc - endless error messages that I could not deal with, nor eliminate. I was advised to buy a new external disc and chose this Lacie one - very small with only two short cables and no need for a plug, so it fits in a handbag. Also it is very, very light and very simple to use - just plug in the 2 cables (1 power and 1 data) into the obvious slots, click Back Up Files in the windows menu (I have vista) and it does it all in no time.
The problem I had before I got it persisted on the new Lacie initially and Lacie service assistance was helpful and clear and willing to take back the disc (via the reseller) if need be. In fact, with expert advice in Dublin, I cleared the problem - which did not relate to the new disc, despite the content of the error messages - and it works perfectly.
