Great Camera Bag

(4 out of 5) by G. Lai on Jan

I received this bag as a gift and liked it so much that I bought one for a friend. It is a really great bag that handles my DSLR w/24-120 lens, a spare 70-200 zoom, and a flash. The pocket in the front has room for filters and spare memory cards. I use the two side pockets next to the straps for holding things like pens, hand sanitizer, lens cleaning fluid/cloths. Without the separate zoom, I've been able to fit a bottle of water using one of the side pockets.
I've tried other configurations as well holding just my DSLR and a compact video camera with no problems.
The one thing that worried me about the bag was how the front flap is secured. I've read some reviews where people have flipped the bag open losing the load contained within. This hasn't happened to me and I think it probably has to do more with how the bag is loaded. If it is filled up too high, the front flap won't velcro down properly. That said, I always engage the plastic latch in addition to the velcro to secure my gear.
The bag handles well and has kept my gear safe and dry when I get caught during rain showers. The padding works well and I like the adjustable pieces used to partition out the interior. Best of all, it doesn't quite scream camera bag to potential thieves since the bag hasn't quite gotten the volume of other major makers like Lowepro or have a brand name logo emblazoned across its surface.
I've thought about getting the 6 Million dollar bag but it's a bit too big for my tastes. The 5 million dollar bag is just right.

If you're like me, you'll measure out the dimensions of this bag to get an idea of it's size before you buy it. Pay careful attention to the depth measurement. Even though I measured it out and compared it to another bag I have, I was still surprised by it's thickness. And it doesn't squash down at all, which aside from the padding still leaves way too much thickness in the base of the bag - much more than needed for a lens! I think the bag should have been designed to taper toward the bottom. As for the reviews claiming it doesn't look like a camera bag, if not, I'm not sure what it does look like, because it's stiffness and thickness that make it stand away from your body certainly don't make it look like an everyday messenger-style bag. I was disappointed. If you want a camera bag that doesn't look like a camera bag buy camera bag inserts and stick them in any bag you have. That's my new plan.

I have been looking and looking for a camera bag, my needs are simple hold my camera as Olympus E-420 with a 14-42mm telephoto lens safely when not in use, have room for my long telephoto lens, my flash, an extra battery, filters, lens hoods, lens cloth, camera booklet and extra media cards. This bag delivers. Very rugged and well made. Their was another reviewer that said it the velcro made noise, mine came with two flaps to cover the velcro, thus noiseless opening very cool.
This bag is excellent for the urban shooter or for day hikes, if you need to go back packing you can throw it into your back backpack or into your luggage if you are traveling.
Overall an outstanding product, lots of extra storage, extra storage loops on side. I also have Tenba Messenger bag but it is a little too big for the stuff I carry around when I am out shooting. The Tenba is more of a computer plus camera bag.

I've had this bag for a few years now. I is a nice bag but, the giant velcro piece on the outer flap is very noisy! This is almost always an issue since photographers are most likely shooting in places where they don't want to be noticed like weddings, events, nature, special places, nature, etc. The outer flap is the only cover for the top of the bag so, you can't place it behind since it prevents stuff from falling out or being stolen.
The shoulder strap is also permanently attached to the bag and is very wide. The strap padding is also very large and not removable. It gets twisted with the strap. Since the strap has no way to rotate where it is sewn on the bag, this can be a hassle.
I think all of these issues are fixable but, will Crumpler address function over form?

This bag holds my Nikon d-40, 18-55mm,55-200mm lens,sb-400 flash. If you want a low profile bag this is a good choice. I have not carried this bag on a all day outing but I have no reason to believe that it would be uncomfortable. I didn't purchase this bag for a long time because of the interior dimension discription. The numbers did not seem to add up. I found a good price on the bag from Amazon and gave it a try. I am no longer looking for a camera bag.
