Fantastic picture quality on this TV. One thing I never see people discuss, if you really want to see how "black" of an image an LCD can produce, compare the screen brightness to when the TV is powered off, to when it is powered on displaying a blank black image.
1080p HD material via HDMI is pure eye candy.

My original LC42D64U experienced a thin grey line through the center of the tv screen. It is not a banding issue as its vertical in nature. This issue was experienced by many buyers as evidenced by a simple google search. It apparently is a join issue between the panels.
The only reason I would recommend this tv and sharp is that Sharps customer service was excellent. Emails were replied to within hours, English was spoken clearly and I was given a brand new model minus shipping costs within 2 days of reporting this issue, even though I was our of warranty.
As for the television itself, the picture is excellent, and the amount of inputs are perfect.

I was afraid to purchase something this large mail order and held off for a long time waiting on the local prices to drop but in the end the savings were just to great so I took the plunge. The delivery only took 5 days, coming in 4 days early (yay), and went fairly smoothly (slight mix up about the actual delivery day). It was handled by Eagle since I purchased this directly from Amazon.
I have HD cable service through Cox. The HD images are superb, especially sporting events, though all of the cable HD content looks great. The SD programming looks MUCH better than I expected even when it is zoomed to fit the screen. Do not use what you see in stores as a reference because their video feeds must be terrible. I was worried that SD programming would be unwatchable but it is not a problem. I also don't see any banding or cloudiness issues I have seen the videophiles complain about. Personally I think they are being hyper-critical when looking for faults. This set has great black levels when adjusted properly. The default settings are way too bright, but a little searching online will find good setup defaults to use for the best possible performance.
The Aquos 42D64U is a great value in terms of features and performance. The picture and sound are excellent and it has a nice set of tweakable items to play with. The design of the TV is classy and looks nice sitting in the room. I would definitely recommend this TV to anyone. Actually I have already made another sale for Sharp because my best friends father just ordered one based on our praise. I am very pleased with my purchase and you will be too.
Don't forget to purchase a couple of budget HDMI cables to go with it. You will want them for the easiet and cleanest connections you have ever seen. You can order them from Amazon for less than 10 bucks.

First and foremost the picture (1080p) and sound (30 watts) are exceptional. When this TV is hooked up with a digital source (Cable) for digital music the sound coming from the front bar speakers fills the entire room with rich deep bass and great sound overall. The 3 HDMI connections is a huge plus but the one other thing that really should be added to most of these reviews is just how beautiful this 3 3/4 inch thick case looks. Compared to all other lcd's out there, this is a true work of art and the picture is stunning. There is no banding nor dead pixels what so ever, just a gorgeous picture. I think sharp got it right when they put the speakers below the monitor instead of at the sides. The other TV's look too wide because of this while the Sharp's cleaner lines and slight curve on the bottom, which hides the speakers, looks...like a work of art!!! When you register your LC-42D64U with Sharp on-line they automatically extend your warranty for an extra three-months for free. Lastly, thank-you Amazon for the great price and free delivery (white glove) that actually arrived 2 days ahead of schedule in perfect condition. My entire family is very pleased with this TV.

This is my first LCD purchase as I did my homework for nearly 3 months. I have owned this for 9 months now and absolutely love it. It has ample HDMI inputs, weighs nearly 20lbs less than its predecessor and looks "Sharp" even turned off. Along with HD programming, my friends couldnt wait to watch ANY sporting event. Hockey had OUTSTANDING clarity and the Olympics were just WOW! I would definately recomend this TV to anyone making a LCD purchase.
