Lexar Media Professional Series UDMA 4GB Compact Flash 300x is perfect!!!

(5 out of 5) by Craig A. Havran on May 28, 2009 (Omaha, NE)
Since I've seriously gotten into outdoor scenic and nature photography my needs have changed. This CF card meet my needs in every way I can imagine. As I am looking to start selling my photography, I now have a new brand of card that I will not be going away from. The Lexar Media Professional Series UDMA Compact Flash 300x series of cards will not be replaced from my system.

Great CF

This is a fantastic CompactFlash card, but be sure to order the Firewire 800 card reader. The card allows the camera to record very quickly, but getting large files off the card is much easier with a Firewire reader. Works flawlessly with a Mac.

Dissapointed

(2 out of 5) by David Siegfried on Feb 6, 2009 (Chicago, IL United States)
The card does not meet the advertised 45MB/s write speed. I am only getting 23MB/s read and 20MB/s sequential write. Purchased with a CF to IDE adapter intending to use as a solid state drive in a laptop, however due to technical reasons this brand is not suitable as a boot drive unless you modify the Windows driver. Lexar tech support was not very helpful, stated they do not support use as a fixed drive in a computer.

Pricey! I guess it would be decent for use in a camera, but my tests show there are better/faster 300x cards out there for less money.

The speed difference is visible

Despite the price difference -- UDMA cards are a lot more expensive than regular CompactFlash --, after a lot of research I decided it was worth giving this Lexar card a try. I already own a couple of Lexar 133x CF and SDHC cards and know, from experience, how good the brand is.

My particular need in photography are good burst mode and fast transfer rates, and the Lexar UDMA delivers. I've taken maybe 300 photos with it and feel that, overall, it does improve the camera speed in writing images (which affects burst rate). But the more noticeable difference to me so far is how fast the images are downloaded into the computer. With an UDMA card reader (in my case, the ATP AF-CRMBK-MV1 Multislot PROMAX USB2.0 UDMA Card Reader -Retail (Black), which has proven to be a fantastic investment -- read review in the product's page if you are interested) I download hundreds of hi-res images in less than a third of the time it takes me to do the same operation with a regular card + reader.

I still have to use this card more and observe its performance better -- the problem being that when you're chasing a bird you're not really focusing on the memory card! --, but so far I can say that it is a lot faster than non-UDMA memory cards. If you're looking at buying one of these, make sure beforehand that your camera and card reader are compatible with UDMA, that is, that they really will benefit from its advantages. Otherwise it'll just work like a normal CompactFlash card, but with a higher price tag.
