I was prepared to purchase the dell D620 business laptop because of its dedicated graphics card. After doing more research I ended up choosing the Asus A8JS-4S050E. At the time of my purchase the Asus A8JS offered the best bang for the buck.
DESIGN
I really liked the minimalist design. It is all plastic, but the feel of it is definitely not cheap.
PERFORMANCE
In terms of performance, the A8JS was one of the best 14.1" laptop I could find. Now keep in mind this laptop was purchased in May/June 07 so if your reading this and its 2010, things may have changed..
With a 2.0 Ghz CPU, 2MB RAM, and dedicated Nvidia Go 7700 graphics card, It ran the usual Word and Excel programs w/out any problems. I installed Oblivion on the machine and ran it at maximum graphics settings. For the most part the A8JS was able to handle it, although sometimes there was some minor choppiness when there was alot of movement on the screen. I adjusted some of the settings and it ran perfectly.
SOUND
Not much to say except that the sound is not too good. Get headphones or some external speakers.
SCREEN
In terms of clarity I only have my old Dell 700M to compare it to and the 700M definitely has a clearer and more vibrant screen. But from what Ive seen not many screens are better than the 700M.
For the most part the screen is bright and clear. However, the screen doesn't have a wide viewing angle. This could be good or bad. If you are not near the front of the screen it will be hard to view things clearly. On the other hand, it offers great privacy.
BATTERY
The battery life is just average, I'm guessing it's due to the dedicated graphics card. I get about 2 hours more or less depending on what I'm using it for.
CONCLUSION
Overall I am quite happy with my purchase. The pluses definitely outway the minuses for me. If you are looking for something that is fairly portable and that can handle the latest 2007 games, I have no problems recommending the Asus A8JS.
