Gorgeous
The Sony Blu-Ray DVD is everything you want in
true 1080P picture and sound quality.
The images literally leap off the TV.
I have no reservations in saying that I am
thoughly pleased with my purchase.
Also the technology of Blu-Ray is far
superior to HD-DVD and the selection of movies
is quite extensive. Even my old DVDs play in 1080i and are better than I expected for quality.
Sincerely yours,
Charles A. Kenny

BDP-S300 is characterized by Inadequate Sound Decoding Options
This player had the potential for being Sony's finest BluRay player yet. Unfortunately Sony lied to its customers' yet again offering Dolby True HD functionality but no Dolby True HD. Fact is, this player relies on DD and DTS that are available via coax/SPDIF), optical and analog wires. You can get uncompressed PCM but you will need a high tech HDMI 1.1 capable amp. Otherwise, you will not be able to listen to all the other advanced methods of providing audio.

not worth it
not really worth it. I would recommend getting an upconverting player at $70.00-$100.00, it will save a lot of hassle and save you money as you won"t have to buy the blu-ray disc.

DreamWorks Animation, Paramount choose HD DVD
I got the ps3 and xbox hd dvd player both play movies great and all but the stand alone players for blu ray are a little bit pricey considering you can gat a video game system and blu ray player for almost the same price no brainer or another smart move by sony to sell more ps3's ..but it dosent seem to be working all to well... on another note DreamWorks Animation, Paramount have just announced hd dvd exclusive support ! that means no transformers or shrek or blades of glory on blu ray! ouch...

Great! But FYI: does not include HDMI cable
UPDATED:
So we got it hooked up, and it looks great! Picture is ultra-crisp and clear, sound quality is amazing. It looks better than our HD-DVD Xbox 360 add-on. The navigation is also much easier than with our HD-DVD.
Some dark scenes look extra dark, much more so than on the HD-DVD or our old Sony DVD player.
Upscaling: We tried out several different movies by playing them on our regular Sony DVD player and then on the BD. Older movies benefit much less than newer movies from the upscaling.
The older movies we tried (Singin' In the Rain, The Godfather) had some added clarity -- bluriness and pixelation were corrected. You also got to see much more of the movie, as it upscaled it to the size of our screen, Sony KDL-52XBR2 52" Bravia XBR 1080p LCD HDTV.
Newer movies also benefitted, like LOTR. The colors were more vibrant, especially the greens, and the picture was much more crisp, and sized up as well.
Overall, we are very happy with this player and I would up the stars to four, but I can't seem to. There are some drawbacks, I guess, that other posters have mentioned, but I have not experienced them yet.
(Old review:)
For the full 1080p experience, you need an HDMI cable. Unfortunately, this model does not come with an HDMI cable included, which is extremely disappointing. Instead of being able to enjoy this out of the box, I now need to purchase a cable which should be included, IMO. No where on the amazon page does it say that it does NOT come with the cable.
Therefore I am giving it three stars since I have not used it yet and am very annoyed that not all the required hardware is included in the price/box.
I *will* amend my review once we get it up and running with the HDMI tonight. To appease those that say this is *not* a review, I will say this is a good looking machine, and the price was right all things considered.
