I am not a techie and needed to replace a malfunctioning CD burner in my desktop. As advertised this drive was easy to install and has worked very well. I have not taken it through it's paces and have not burned a DVD but CD burning is super fast and easy.
Awesome
Just got this on sale for $40 at a store because I just had to return the Memorex that I got a couple of days ago , the Memorex sucks!!
This one here on the other hand is $10 cheaper regular price than Memorex , but let me tell you something ,this thing works waaaaaay better.
I just ripped a long home dvd in 11 minutes where as the Memorex wouldn't even do it because of a very light scratch, and the original Sony writer does but in about 23 minutes or so.
I recommend this DRU-170C Sony!!!
So far, so good
Was a plug and play installation; no decent software came with it. Price was great due to free shipping and no tax. Amazon shipments have been fine with no issues (I purchased a Samsung 56" projection TV; delivered fine and the guys unpacked it and took the boxes!).
I have only burned a few DVD's so far, using Sony DVD +R, and none have failed due to burner issues. I use the DIVX Player to burn DVD's, along with Roxio 8 (very stable for me, however I hear later versions have major issues and tech support is a serious joke). DIVX is a great alternative because the video quality is still excellent, but the file size goes from several gigs to about 750MB on average. AND you can burn as many movies as will fit on one DVD. Just be sure to get a DVD player that supports DIVX.
Inexpensive and full-featured
This drive reads and writes pretty much every format you can think of and does it quickly at a great price!
Easy to Install, but Beware of Nero Software
The price was great, the shipping was fast, and the install was VERY easy with the large print graphical setup sheet. However...I recommend against installing the Nero 7 software that came with it. I have been getting read errors and a lot of pop up screens when shutting down, that I have discovered online are a direct result of installing the Nero CD/DVD burning software that came with the drive. I recommend using Roxio or some other more widely used burning software that you might already have installed on your machine prior to installing the drive. Otherwise, Sony makes terrific hardware and it should last me for the life of my PC, if not longer.
