good quality, good price

This works great for my small living room. This sub gets the power to rumble you out of your seat, but also the ability to scale back to mix better. I have experenced no hum or noise from it.

One small draw back: the power saver option might turn sub off while in use. But if there is no low freq sounds going to the sub, it will turn off. It isn't really anything to keep me from buying.

Good Sub for small cash

(4 out of 5) by Thomas W. Samarati on Nov 18, 2008 (Sonoma County)
Just installed a living room 5.1 system. Sony bb-1000 for the front and surrounds, the CN 5000 center speaker and this subwoofer. This combination is well balanced. While using test tones I measured the output with a db meter. With the amp EQ set flat, the system was balanced within 3db all around the room.

This 200 watt sub is plenty powerful when used prudently. A subwoofer is just there to provide the bottom octaves of sound, you're really not supposed to rattle your neighbors windows.

Sounds good, looks good, and the whole shebang cost a whole $360 here on Amazon.com This Sony combo is a big sound improvement over the small satellite speakers like the bose acoustimass, KLH, or Cambridge Soundwoks. I just installed a Bose Aoustimass 10 system in a friends house, I prefer the sound of my new Sony system here better than her $1,000 "lifestyle choice".

Great value subwoofer

(5 out of 5) by Traveller on Nov 4, 2008 (USA)
This thing is a lot of bang for the buck. It is my first subwoofer, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I know it provides very smooth bass and some outstanding low-frequency effects. While playing Master and Commander, you can literally feel the house shaking as the cannons rip through the boats.

The only drawback is as mentioned in another review, it clicks on and off after around 5-10 minutes of inactivity. I probably wouldn't have noticed it had I not read about it here (shows you that sometimes what you don't know won't hurt you). My wife has never noticed it. Again, it is barely noticeable, and you can only hear the click if it happens during a very quiet part of the movie.

Overall, a fantastic, powerful subwoofer at a great price.

I'm not an expert but for my modest home theater set up this unit fills the bill.

Not an audiophile, but seems to work great with good sound for movies, music and games.
