Terrible support makes unit worthless!! NOMORE ONKYO FOR ME

(1 out of 5) by P. User on Mar 1, 2009 (TX)
I bought this ONKYO SR805 receiver (not from amazon UNFORTUNATELY) regarding the reviews, nice features, I wanted to hear a good sound on everything. Worked nice for few months, however its gets like an oven, I was wondering when will that cause a problem.
About 4 months ago, at startup I lost audio at first 20 minutes, so when I start it up, there is no audio for 20 minutes. I said shoot, checked internet, a lot of ONKYO users having all kinds of problems, some of them having blue dots, some of them having audio lipsync problem, some of them having the problem I am having. I work in IT industry, I can understand, so lets get it fixed. First of all, they don't have authorized repair center in SAN ANTONIO which is the second-largest city in the state of Texas and the seventh largest city in the United States. Not to mention you can't really call anyone, you are in the hands of the faith of an e-mail ! (xxxxx@us.onkyo.com)
So few days later I got email that saying, I can send it to either Corpus Christy or Houston. Ok-key, so I shipped it to Houston, costed me $60 (only 250 miles away with ground shipping) Came back week later, open the box, no work order, no repair or test reports, nothing!! So its OK, I plugged it in, not working!!!!!! Just to make sure, I unplugged everything and just ran the speaker calibration. (so nothing else, ONKYO and speakers alone) Not working.. All they did is factory reset button I assume, since I was lost all my settings..
I sent e-mail back, that saying its not fixed, somebody needs to explain whats wrong, why its not fixed.. No answer. No answer, sent another e-mail, to the adress xxxxx@us.onkyo.com (which was the address that I sent and received info)
So bottom line is, I have a machine thats still under warranty, paid 700 dollars, brand is ONKYO, I can't get it fixed, I can't even talk to anyone about it. Here is what I learned, one thing, don't buy ONKYO, if you need help you will be alone and you'll get terrible service, second is go buy from somewhere you trust such as AMAZON.COM or local shop, if something goes wrong let them deal with it, it may not be the best deal on the net, but it will worth it. Some kind of extended warranty might help too. But let my loss be your gain, don't buy ONKYO, any of them.. There will be something you will need help, all you got is no support, no service..
I choose this way to get some attention from ONKYO while helping decide consumers what to get, if any onkyo representetive reading this, I want you guys to know whoever is receiving the xxxxx@us.onkyo.com mails, needs to be monitoring or must be routed to multiple people. Since its the only contact point for consumer and whoever that is, is deciding the very important part of the ONKYO's faith, look and the reputation.

Excellent receiver for the price

My only real complaint is the weight. Other than that this is a great receiver (feature and sound quality wise) for the price

Buy at your own risk!

(1 out of 5) by Gary U. Berard on Jun 14, 2008 (Schenectady, NY United States)
Beware, the audio decoding chip in this unit is defective. When used to decode the DTS-HD MA bitstream of certain blu-ray discs (the fly, avpr and others) this unit will cause a loud "POP" in your speakers (may or may not damage your speakers). I have this unit, I have this problem, no firmware has been released and tech support is no help (actually they are quite obnoxious be prepared to get talked to like you are incompetent). Otherwise the unit is excellent but due to the lack of customer support I would recommend another manufacturer (this is the last, in a long line of Onkyo receivers, that I will buy). [...]

already in the shop for repairs

(3 out of 5) by John Cober on Dec 12, 2007 (texas)
I had the receiver in for about 2 weeks and I had to send it off for repairs. It never upscaled any image up to 1080p or anything close to it. Additionally, the display didnt work property. I could have all speakers working and only the left and right front speakers were displayed on the receiver.

On a positive note, the help line was in fact very helpful.

It does get really hot!
