Needs more

I made the mistake of buying this sound system.
Not that it is bad... But it wasnt for me.
Although i has a good sound, the sub is under powered, even after changing the receiver settings.
The receiver has no HDMI.

Other than that i like everything else.
I am upgrading receiver to Onkyo 506 or 606.
I am upgrading sub to Dayton SUB-100 HT Series 10"

Purchased for my son, who is reeally into music and speakers. he is estatic with the sound quality. The surroud sound works so well, you may think someone is in an adjoining room from off-screen recorded sounds >

Mixed experience

(3 out of 5) by P. P. MISHRA on Jan 28, 2008 (Boston, MA)
I decided to try out the HT-SR600 and a Yamaha RX-V361/NS-SP1600 speakers after reading the reviews and my experience is summarized below:

Onkyo HT-SR600
--------------
Pros: Very easy to set up
(color coded speaker wires make it a breeze), Superb receiver
Cons: Passive subwoofer weak/underpowered also vibrates a lot at higher volumes,
speakers a tad large for a entertainment stand and sound OK but not great. Also as someone else had remarked, music unremarkable even with dts:neo6 music setting. Sports and movies sound great however.

Yamaha RX-V361/NS-SP1600
------------------------

Pros: Overall an awesome system (5 x 100w and a 100watt powered subwoofer)Superb receiver and speakers, the tiebreaker for me here was the powered subwoofer and speakers which deliver awesome sound. Music enhancer superb, you can make out the difference right away (Not sure if this is Neo:6). Speakers smaller in size (better for my entertainment center) and sound better than the onkyo's.
To summarize i cannot emphasize how much difference a powered sub makes on LFE sounds and finally selected the Yamaha.

Cons: Setup was easy however no color coded wires, speaker wire came in one big roll and i had to measure and cut what i required. Not too big a deal, but only if you have time

Price: Yamaha ($300 from best) buy vs Onkyo ($270 from Circuit city)
Not too much of a difference to justify the Onkyo however i am still giving it 3.5-4 stars for the receiver and wiring alone. The sub is in my opinion a no-no.

Sounds Great to me!

(5 out of 5) by Thomas M. Beck on May 2, 2008 (Tempe, AZ United States)
I just picked this sytem up yesterday at Fry's Electronics for $153.00. It was supposed to be on sale for $191.00, I'm not going to argue with an additional $38.00 savings.

Set-up was a breeze and it sounds great. I hooked it up differently than they instructed for using a: Cable Box, DVD Player and a TV. As I have HDMI cables from my Cable Box and DVD Player to my Plasma TV. This is how my Plasma TV said to connect (RCA Cables from The Home Theatre OUT Connections)

You can't beat the sound for $153.00 !!!

Great sound, great price

(5 out of 5) by Zachary Jebbett on Jan 19, 2008
I would recommend this product to anyone who is in the market for an awesome stereo for under $300. It packs a huge punch and sounds amazing. The sub woofer shakes my whole room in movies, the 5.1 surround is awesome, and the speakers look good, sound good, and don't take up too much room. I had never heard of Onkyo, but I definitely would buy their stuff again.
