Most Helpful First | Newest FirstGood plastic
I travel enough that I'd like to have a little protection for the Mac Laptop and I don't want to add yet another bag within a bag.
This is a simple plastic cover in two pieces that snaps into place and that is easily removed. I opted for clear plastic .. The red is attractive. It has a good feel.
I'd probalby give it five stars, but like almost everything designed for Macs, it costs more than it should. There's probably a dollar's worth of plastic in it, some design tim, etc. But I haven't seen anything better.
needs tweaking
I think everyone will have the same problem of the right hinge catching on the bottom shell, causing a loud snapping sound sometimes when you open the lid quickly. I solved this by scraping a bit of plastic off the edge there, giving the hinge more clearance. it's a pretty easy fix. Also, I noticed that my right front bottom corner keeps popping out - could be because the little rubber foot on the macbook pro doesn't quite fit into the hold in the bottom shell, so it doesn't sit all the way down and get latched in.
These are all quality control issues that for such an expensive product, they should do better. it requires some relatively minor mould modification - so they should just tweak it.
Another issue I've noticed is that my screen can't open as far back with the shell on as without. this is because the shell thickness is preventing it.
But overall, the case does what it's suppose to = protect your macbook/pro. I'd love to have a clear smoke version, or even a darker grey.
An Excellent Way to Dress Up & Protect Your MacBook Pro
My early version MacBook Pro suffered from some surface scuffing on the bottom, and a bit of a dent on the top... before I outfitted it with Speck's See-Thru hard case in blue. Just as hermit crabs need a stronger shell for safety, so too do MacBook Pro computers require something stronger than the rather thin aluminum they're born with... and Speck's See-Thru hard case is the optimal solution. Whereas slipcover cases come off just when laptops are most likely to get dinged, scuffed, splashed or scraped, the hard case can stay on the laptop all the time, whether it's open or closed.
The choice of eight different colors for these laptop cases is excellent, allowing Mac owners to find something to match their individual style. The sturdy polycarbonate plastic is just the perfect thickness to provide the rather fragile laptop with a water-resistant, scuff-resistant, and dent-resistant protective cover. Those who wish to further personalize their computer can slip artwork between their computer and the hard case whenever the mood strikes... and this kind of personalization can easily be changed as often as desired.
Installation of the See-Thru hard case is a breeze. No sooner had I opened the wrapper, I snapped the hard case on my computer in just a few seconds. It went together so quickly that I was startled, so I studied the directions and saw I'd put it together perfectly... and there was easy access to all the ports on the sides.
One of my concerns about the See-Thru hard case had been that it might adversely increase the temperature of my computer, which occasionally tends to run a bit hot. I was relieved to find that my computer did not run hotter with the See-Thru case than without it. The fact that the See-Thru case lifts the MacBook Pro up a bit higher off the work surface means that there is more room for air to circulate underneath the computer, so there is a better chance for it to be cooled.
I'd heard that some people have trouble with the hard case interfering with opening the laptop fully, but I had no trouble opening the laptop up all the way smoothly, fully, and quietly every time.
I recommend Speck's See-Thru hard case to anyone seeking to maintain their MacBook Pro in the best possible condition with some beautiful color options. This is a great way to extend the life of your computer along with your enjoyment of it... and along with key covers and wrist guards, it's the best way to keep your computer looking and working like its brand new!
Disappointed
I have been less impressed with the new case for a number of reasons:
1) The additional insulation does cause heat related performance issues.
2) I had to trim the bottom case with a sharp knife so that it didn't catch when opening and closing.
3) Even after trimming the case, as recommended on the Speck website, the bottom part of the case still doesn't secure completely to the laptop (although this could be specific to my machine).
4) The additional weight on back of the screen causes the laptop to shut with considerable more force.
5) The case adds overall weight and size.
6) The case further limits the angle at which the laptop can be opened.
Still, I use the top part of the case without the bottom part. The case provides some protection against the flexible nature of the screen part of the laptop. If you allow the top to flex you run the risk that external pressure will push the rivets (the ones that attach the apple icon) into the back of your display. This will cause little dark spots on your screen that don't go away.
"How'd you paint your Macbook Pro red?!"
I get asked all the time how I "painted" my MacBook Pro red -- it's pretty incredible what a spectacle it is -- in a good way! I swear, I should become a traveling salesperson, this case looks so good!
BUT, there is one issue -- primarily that the fit is so tight that the underside has developed about an inch long crack from one of the corners, and I've only had it about a month.
I intend to contact the manufacturer and see if I can get a replacement because otherwise, this was a great buy.
