Laptop Optical Drive

Dec 1, 2007 - By Nathanial I. Makar (Wilkes-Barre, PA USA)

Difficult to find for my Toshiba satellite l35 s1054 and it fits and is compatible with XP and I believe Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. Seems a little flimsy and the face is cheap so i just replaced it. Other than that performs magnificent for a slim drive and gets the job done for burning iso files to dvdr.

Please bear in mind that the firmware for this device is not easy to find and vendor takes time to email back. Still on the fight...

Low Cost Laptop Optical Drive Replacement

Sep 12, 2008 - By Richard C. McDonald

When the optical drive in my Compaq laptop failed, I looked around for a replacement. None of the computer stores in my area carry laptop drives. The official HP replacement costs way too much so I checked Amazon and found the DW-ISD081 at one third the HP price. I measured my existing drive and it was an exact match, so I ordered the DW-ISD081 which came in five days. It came loose in plastic wrap within a cardboard shipping box with no documentation. One of the faceplate tabs was broken, but I replaced the faceplate with the one from my original drive so it would match my computer. I had to remove the mounting bracket from my old drive and attach it to the new drive. It was easy to slide in the new drive and screw it in place. When I turned on my computer, the new drive was immediately recognized. Even though the construction of the DW-ISD081is more flimsy than my original drive, it works fine. I now have the ability to burn DVDs which I didn't have before for a lot less money than HP would charge for only a CD burner.

works perfectly

Aug 21, 2007 - By John F (NY)

Works perfectly with my gateway nx560xl. (Although I'll never buy another gateway product... but that's another story!) Using it with Nero. No problems/complaints to date.

No firmware for Toshiba 1415-S173

Sep 13, 2008 - By J. Kim (Pleasanton, CA)

Installed it but Toshiba 1415-S173 did not recognize it (IDE #1 Error). Through web site, Toshiba laptop required either firmware or 45 & 47 pin connection for changing master/slave cable. I requested the firmware to seller but I did not get any response yet...
