I waited and waited for this player to become available on Amazon, but then on a trip to see competing models at a local Best Buy, there it was. I bought it--and returned it two days later. The image quality wasn't bad, but it didn't seem great, and the thing is *incredibly* heavy and thick. The specs listed here and on Toshiba's site are, I think, for the player without its battery. The battery is a slice--i.e., it attaches to the bottom of the player and is just as wide and deep as the player, and it adds maybe half an inch to the overall height, and lots of weight. So, with the battery attached, it's about two inches thick, or about the same as a heavy-duty desktop replacement notebook computer (one of those 17-inchers). It weighs 4 pounds without the battery, so maybe 5 pounds with it. It was just too much to travel with, especially when flying coach--it only opens like a laptop, so if the clod in front of you ratchets his seat all the way back, you may not be able to angle the screen properly.
I exchanged it for a Panasonic DVD-LS82, another very new model. That model doesn't have the high-resolution screen, but it's much lighter and more compact, the image quality is fine, its screen can be oriented in a number of space-saving ways, has more than twice the battery life, and it comes with an adapter for mounting to the back of a car front seat--for $50 less than this model. It worked very well on a recent trip.
Great Player Overall
If you want a player with a large screen, don't be surprised if the player is large. It's about two inches less deep and 2 inches less wide than a small laptop, and about the same thickness with the battery attached. It has a fantastic picture - very bright and amazing color and contrast - and an incredible battery life. To test the battery life, I played the same movie, with two headphones plugged in, at a sufficient volume level. The player lasted 7 full hours! I didn't buy it to read memory cards, but it's definitely a nice plus. It has full picture adjustments, including color, a great remote, a very nice on-screen display, a non-glare screen and a sharp look. Of course, the speakers are all but worthless, but that is what I have found on all other players I was looking at. Also, it will remember the last scene you were watching on the LAST FIVE DISCS. So you can turn off the player and not lose where you were. I am very happy with my purchase. I think you would be hard pressed to find anything similar that had the same quality and functionality.
Adventures in viewing
I have progressed through several evolutions of portable DVD players. This unit provides the features that I have come to expect in quality DVD players. The most important feature: restart from shutdown while viewing a DVD it returns to the exact moment of the video where it was shutdown.
Controls are easy to use. It could use a digital volume control but the manual wheel control is quite serviceable. The card slot allows me to view my digital stills and videos from my camera. Quite a boon for reducing devices needed when travelling abroad. Battery life is also well rated, I have yet to run out of battery power while viewing multiple 1 hr episodes of my DVD series I watch while on commuting flights.
A MINI TV!
Toshiba is the best in electronics! I have had 3 of their portable players. First one being SD 1400 7 inch screen, then SD 1850 8 inch screen & now the SD 2900. Each model is dependable & always gives the best picture. The 10.2 inch screen is like carrying around a tv rather than a portable device. It is the size of a laptop & will hold the stopped place on a disc when the machine is off. Battery lasts FOREVER! Went to Arizona (a 3 1/2 hour plane trip) & was able to use the battery in the airport as well as the plane without having to recharge once. A very good investment for dvd lovers.
awesome player with multifunctional reader
I read about it and thought this was the best. I bought it because it could read DivX files from an SD card which was crucial rather than burning CDs and DVDs all the time. it's a great player with terrific battery life (~5 hrs of DVD playing, I haven't tested with just DivX, but I suspect would be longer).
The screen is bright and sharp, but sometimes, the backgrounds look a little washed out--my only complaint. The remote control is nice and places for 2 headsets. I haven't tried it on a plane yet, but it may require an amplifier booster--particularly for DivX files as it may not be loud enough.
I've never owned another portable DVD player but this one is terrific (and beats using my laptop and draining its battery life on flights). My daughter loves it. Highly recommended ---especially if your'e going to use the card reading function.
