I bought this drive to upgrade from a DVD-ROM on my 6 year old Compaq notebook (Presario 17XL3). It was easy to swap the drives: remove the 6 screws holding the drive "sled", remove the sled and IDE port adapter, transfer them to the new drive and install the screws. Windows XP pro recognized the drive. The drive comes with an OEM version of Nero 6, which has just about everything you would want to use the drive for, including a back-up utility. The drive door/bezel is smaller than the one on my original drive and can't be swapped, so I have a small gap around the drive (it's a different color, too, black) but I can live with that. Be forewarned: from reading about this drive and other available replacements on other web pages, I have heard that this drive is not compatible with all notebooks, so do some research. Also, your exact swapping method may be different from mine. But it's working great for me and now I can retire the floppy drive my computer came with!
