can't be beat... for the price!
I love it. I just received it yesterday. I was considering this or the Denon 1940CI. I couldn't be happier with my choice.
Pros:
-I have this unit paired with an older marantz AVR (SR8000) and the dvd remote can control the volume and mute the amp. Hooray! I can put away the bulky universal remote.
-multi-region for my region 2 discs. easy hack, just google "marantz dv4001 region hack" it should be right there on the first link.
-fantastic sound and video. you can't find anything better for double the $$. if you are using the digital output, you are listening to the sound processed by something else anyway, usually an AVR which may have better DAC's or not. i could hear differences between using the dig out and the analog on discs from tool, the dead and thievery corporation. the differences were very subtle. you also have options on sampling rates on both digital and analog outputs. i tried them all and suffice it to say everything sounded good. as for the video i'm still on crt and using s-video cables so it looks good to me but i'm not using hdmi or upscaling or an HD monitor.
-price, sure free is better but... you will not find a higher quality product shipped to you for less.
-this would make an excellent stand alone cd player at a fraction of the price of of most decent cd players.
cons-
yes there are some... i bought this item with shipping for $82. it might have lost a star or two if i had paid A LOT more for it. had i bought this at it's original list price of $300, i might complain about:
-slow loading and reacting to remote commands.
-remote layout not to my preferences, not terribly intuitive but i'm sure i'll get used to it or go universal anyway.
-had to buy a digi coax cable as i only had optical cables. buy a cheap one, digital cables do not affect sound quality. they transmit 0's and 1's not analog audio signals. i picked up a belkin one here for $8-9 and it's fine.
-no 5.1 analog outs (Denon does have this)
-takes a long time to ship from WA to VT??
-i want to buy more of them...

Can you believe this price, can you?
I wanted to replace my old Pioneer dvd player used as a cd player, and when i saw this, and with an incredible low prize i didn't think it even once.
Now what can i say. Just buy it, you won't be disappointed, excellent as an Entry Level HI-FI Cd player. Excellent.

You can't go wrong-Few players sound like this
Wow Is what I have to say.
I have the Marantz DV 6001 for my Living Room top model
But this one rocks too. And I'm still using It on a second widescreen so the picture quality Is Incredible too.
Few players upscaling Is as good as this.
If you want quality but your on a budget this player will do you fine with an HDMI cable for your receiver or TV for best picture and sound.
Get a Marantz
Makes a 2 year old Sony upconverter look like a toy for perspective!
This player will play all formats too so It's the 1 player for all!
