In real world conditions (buildings, trees, etc.), the range is approximatley 2 miles. Any standard 2-way radios will get no more than a 2-mile range. This is the only reason I didn't rate these 5 stars.
The sound quality is excellent, the privacy codes are a nice feature and the size is perfect.
I highly recomment this product.

Bad performance
(2 out of 5) by Dmitriy Plotkin on Jul 27, 2008 (Brooklyn, NY USA)20-Mile Range is just a joke. No more than half a mile. I tested it out at different conditions(beach, forest, city, shopping mall). The best usage at shopping mall, but in this case you don't need to buy product for $60.
When you press buttom to talk, it's not ready to work immediately and people on the other side are not able to hear you.

bad for headsets

Also, the control could be better. Switching from standby to weather radio, for instance, requires repeated pushing of the 'mode' button.
The power is good, but apparently is line-of-site, as I could not reach home today from two miles away with intervening hills.
But they will work for what we intend with them -

I did, however, have a good laugh trying to get my wife to understand me saying " You want fries with that?". Now I really feel for the people working at drive-though windows. Although they sound a LOT clearer than these units.
Makes it double hilarious that I bought them at "Fry's".
OMW back to return them now.
