In my opinion the 260's are a great buy. I love mine, my wife and I use them all the time. The range that we have tryed so far is 1 mile in house and up the road they did fine no loss of reception the best feature of the cobras is the hands free talking I just love it I can work on a power panel and talk to someone at the circuit. I am an electrician by trade. The are lite and compact and they did not cost a arm and a leg. I think there the best deal for the money out there!

My needs were pretty close, about 1 mile. We were shuttling people, using 4 radios. Clarity was good, having to switch channels occassionally. Easy to use. We use for 6 hours at a time. In the future, I will carry spare disposable AA batteries if the rechargeable batteries lose charge.

These were rated for 12miles - and if you've ever done any research on these type of 2-way radios...regardless of the rating, if you're able to get a 1 mile range from them, you're a lucky few. I fully expected that disappointment. However, what I did not expect was that the rechargeable batteries that it came with were aweful. On a full charge, it barely lasted a trip to the mall on less than mild usage. Btw...there is no indicator to say if it is fully charged. I charged it for the recommended 10 hrs. Anyway...I had another pair of refurb Uniden that I got for almost nothing...that pair was just as good, if not better than this one which I paid $45 including shipping. Not a recommendation.
