Good plastic

(4 out of 5) by In the Middle of the Road on Feb 13, 2007 (Connecticut)
I travel enough that I'd like to have a little protection for the Mac Laptop and I don't want to add yet another bag within a bag.

This is a simple plastic cover in two pieces that snaps into place and that is easily removed. I opted for clear plastic .. The red is attractive. It has a good feel.

I'd probalby give it five stars, but like almost everything designed for Macs, it costs more than it should. There's probably a dollar's worth of plastic in it, some design tim, etc. But I haven't seen anything better.

needs tweaking

(4 out of 5) by J. Lin on Mar 15, 2007 (Long Beach, CA USA)
I think everyone will have the same problem of the right hinge catching on the bottom shell, causing a loud snapping sound sometimes when you open the lid quickly. I solved this by scraping a bit of plastic off the edge there, giving the hinge more clearance. it's a pretty easy fix. Also, I noticed that my right front bottom corner keeps popping out - could be because the little rubber foot on the macbook pro doesn't quite fit into the hold in the bottom shell, so it doesn't sit all the way down and get latched in.

These are all quality control issues that for such an expensive product, they should do better. it requires some relatively minor mould modification - so they should just tweak it.

Another issue I've noticed is that my screen can't open as far back with the shell on as without. this is because the shell thickness is preventing it.

But overall, the case does what it's suppose to = protect your macbook/pro. I'd love to have a clear smoke version, or even a darker grey.

Good case but cheaply constructed

(2 out of 5) by Olivier Bonin on Dec 15, 2006 (San Francisco CA USA)
I saw that case on someone else's laptop, and thought it'd be the best thing to protect the computer from getting dirty, from scratches. It's actually the best product I have seen around to do that, but unfortunately even at such a high price as $40, it's been constructed cheaply. Here you are the 2 major problems I have found:
- The case is basically 2-3mm (millimeter) thick and cover almost all the outside of the laptop. It comes in 2 pieces one for the bottom and one for the top (the screen). The bottom comes comes around in the back where the hinge is, but stops to enable the opening of the computer. The screen opening depends on the gap b/w the screen and the bottom part of the computer. That speck case reduces the gap, meaning it reduces the opening of the screen. This is very incovenient when using your laptop while lounging with your laptop on your lap... one of the reasons why you might have a laptop, is to be able to use it everywhere you want. This is clearly a problem and worries me as over time this could potentially add too much pressure on the hinge. I hope a better design will come with this.

- The construction problem, comes also from the hinge area. The same part where the screen extreme bottom-left & bottom-right side hit the bottom part of the speck case. But this time it happens when opening the computer, the screen part of the case catches on the bottom part pushing it down to the point where it could break. This again poses a problem on the computer hinge itself, adding too much pressure on a very sensitive part of a very expensive computer.

I hope others won't have that problem, but I will be reporting this to speck. Hopefully they can improve the design for what in the first place is a very good idea.

"How'd you paint your Macbook Pro red?!"

(4 out of 5) by C. Messina on May 11, 2007 (San Francisco, CA)
I get asked all the time how I "painted" my MacBook Pro red -- it's pretty incredible what a spectacle it is -- in a good way! I swear, I should become a traveling salesperson, this case looks so good!

BUT, there is one issue -- primarily that the fit is so tight that the underside has developed about an inch long crack from one of the corners, and I've only had it about a month.

I intend to contact the manufacturer and see if I can get a replacement because otherwise, this was a great buy.

Disappointed

(2 out of 5) by Gene Leynes on Apr 2, 2007 (Chicago, IL United States)
I have been less impressed with the new case for a number of reasons:
1) The additional insulation does cause heat related performance issues.
2) I had to trim the bottom case with a sharp knife so that it didn't catch when opening and closing.
3) Even after trimming the case, as recommended on the Speck website, the bottom part of the case still doesn't secure completely to the laptop (although this could be specific to my machine).
4) The additional weight on back of the screen causes the laptop to shut with considerable more force.
5) The case adds overall weight and size.
6) The case further limits the angle at which the laptop can be opened.

Still, I use the top part of the case without the bottom part. The case provides some protection against the flexible nature of the screen part of the laptop. If you allow the top to flex you run the risk that external pressure will push the rivets (the ones that attach the apple icon) into the back of your display. This will cause little dark spots on your screen that don't go away.
