Quiet and fast

Jun 22, 2007 - By Sore in Seattle (SEATTLE, WA, USA)

This hard drive performs just as I had hoped. I have several older XP computers; one is a very small laptop with a firewire port but only USB 1.1 (instead of the fast 2.0). So I needed a drive with firewire support. I had worried that this hard drive, which can be powered directly from the firewire or USB port, would require more juice than the laptop could provide through those ports. No problem: it fired right up when I plugged the included firewire into the laptop's port. It also did not need any special software to be installed on the laptop; the laptop recognized the drive immediately. The drive is very quiet and is faster than the internal drive in the laptop. This is the drive you want if you require both USB and firewire connectivity.

Simple and Efficient backups

Nov 6, 2007 - By CJW (Cincinnati, OH USA)

My main criteria for buying this was its ability to be solely firewire-powered, no AC adaptor needed. It is plug-and-play, drag-and-drop simplicity and efficiency at its best. I really think this is a great little drive. Though it arrived pre-formatted to FAT32, it took less than a minute to figure out how to re-format it to HFS+ on my iMac G5.

Before having this external drive, I only made CD & DVD backups -- and rarely at that, mainly because it was tedious and sometimes problematic (insert DVD-RW disk, erase disk, burn disk, insert another disk, erase, burn, insert, etc etc). It would take all afternoon of sitting at the computer just to back up iTunes library. Now with this drive, I backed up my entire Documents, Pictures, Movies, and Music folders (totaling over 40GB) in about 30 minutes, simply dragging and dropping. I love it, and will never procrastinate backing up again!

Pros: small size; powered by Firewire; quiet; fast; easy to operate; trusted Iomega brand; spacious capacity; got it for a low price ($89.00 new).

Cons: online user's guide is web-based, not in paginated PDF form.

No complaints

Feb 25, 2008 - By I. Chan (Santa Clara, CA, USA)

An external HD with Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces. Works without a power brick in either case, and the metal case and finish are exquisite. Internally uses a PATA drive, if you care. No problems.

Works as advertised

Jan 23, 2008 - By Inita Baer

Great product and very portable and light compared to other brands. This hard drive could not be connected by one USB cable to my iBook G4. Powering the hard drive requires plugging in two USB cables (provided in packaging) to the laptop or inserting the firewire plug. The hard drive gets enough power from my laptop if I just plug in the firewire. As mentioned from previous posts, this hard drive is very quiet and read and write speeds are adequate. Drag and drop function works great. Overall a great purchase from a known brand.
